Why Is Montag's Hierarchy Force In Fahrenheit 451

Improved Essays
Why is Montag and his team of firefighters commanded to burn books? What sort of thing would lead a group of men who once put out fires to start them and burn the greatest creations of mankind? Since there have been many instances throughout the chapter “The Hearth and the Salamander” where the government has been hinted at, one can only assume that it has to do with a hierarchy force. Perhaps the government has some sort of brainwashing power over the people. We can see this theory being alluded to when talking about the Mechanical Hound and how Captain says, “It doesn’t think anything we don’t want it to think.” This could possibly be what the government is doing to the people, basically programing them to act and think they way they want

Fire cannot be easily controlled, and once out of control, it’s difficult to regain power of it. Montag and the other firemen learn that no one has a monopoly over the control of fire when they encounter the woman who burns herself rather than have them burn her books (40). By taking away the authority from the firemen, she forces Montag to realize that they aren’t the only ones with the force of fire behind them. This is shown later in the books when Montag turns the fire hose on Beatty, the fire chief (116). When someone takes away this power or makes someone lose control of their element of comfort, the whole situation can spiral out of control quickly.…

It was a pleasure to see things eaten, to see things blackened and changed.” And while the society sees burning as a pleasure, it also embodies knowledge being stripped and individualism as firemen, “out books and the freedom of thought that books represent.” In his description of the burning process, Bradbury uses words such as “venomous” and “death” to show the true nature behind Montag’s profession, and while it brought him joy, his actions were destructive. Burning is also the most irreversible method of destruction, causing the complete destruction of whatever is burned. This way, the use of fire to get rid of books shows the intense desire of this society to completely remove the ideas and knowledge that books may influence on others.…

First of all, fire begins in the book as a symbol of censorship. Fire is used by the government to burn books, and censor information from the past. This allows the government to feed its citizens false information without any fear of repercussions.. Furthermore, another thing that supports this idea is people being brainwashed into the concept that books are were useless. A quote explained on page 95 that connects with this is “Ladies, once a year, every fireman’s allowed to bring one book home, from the old days, to show his family how silly it all was” (95). In a world where books are forbidden, when firemen brought them home; it was to continue the idea that they were unacceptable. This also prevented people from having different ideas about how their world should work. In turn, this made it appropriate for Montag and others to rebel.…

The same ideology is expressed in Fahrenheit 451, for Beatty instructs his employees to burn books to reduce the amount of knowledge people have, but there are still people who break that rule and acquire knowledge of their own in order to educate the uneducated. The article implies that the world is becoming covered in ashes of things that should not be burned, just as the society in Fahrenheit 451, which is covered in “ash butterflies.” The ashes of the burnt trash are toxic to the human body, which compares to the people in Fahrenheit 451, who are not very intelligent & obey everything that they are told, due to their lack of knowledge. Montag is one who starts the fires, yet he owns books as well but does…

What would life be like if everything was censored? First we must know what censorship is because it plays a very important role in both the novel Fahrenheit 451 and the film Pleasantville. Censorship is the practice of officially examining books, and what is viewed either on television and so on, but when examining these a higher power is suppressing the unacceptable parts. With that being said in both the novel and film we see the censorship over literature and television shows being run by that society’s government. Since Fahrenheit 451 and Pleasantville have both books and television censored we find that it is more valuable when our protagonists who once loved their part in their new society, in fact turn against their old ways and spark a rebellion to preserve what is considered outlawed.…

They chose to stand as a symbol of freedom of speech as they will not submit to the government’s norms, and in the process chose their own path of suicide, rather than concede their freedom and knowledge. To burn one of these individuals by force means to burn freedom of speech itself. Finally, Bradbury shows the power of books by changing Montag’s view on books and their purpose in society, from that of a book burner to that of a book preserver, and why they are burned in the novel. Near the middle of the novel, we find out that Montag had stolen a book from the old woman’s burning house.…
