Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day (MLK Day) is a very Important and a special day that we all celebrate. Every year it is the same routine. We get up and go to the parade. Now it is time to do something more with MLK Day. Perhaps take the celebration to a nursing home, a hospital or community park. While we are in these places we could use our talents to model what Dr. King was about. It can be anything, just do something to “make it a day on, and not a day off”.
For example, we can make it a day on by helping senior citizens in many different ways. We can help them clean their homes or mow their lawns for them. If we do this, elderly people would active and apart, not like they can’t do anything anymore. This would boost their faith and encourage them so they won’t feel as dependent anymore.

This will make this day even more special. Now the elderly people in nursing homes, which don’t get to celebrate this day, due to living in a nursing home will get to participate. The elderly could even share what they remember about this time period and teach us.
Next, we can do to make MLK day “a day on, and not a day off”, by going around to public places such as stores, libraries, and other places encourage others to register to vote; because it is a blessing to have equal rights and the right to vote. We can also open up our churches and feed the homeless or take the food to them. We could fellowship to encourage them to believe. We can do this to show thanks to Dr. King for all the marching he did for us. We will also be giving thanks to other people who fought for our equal

As I made my way into Vista Adult Day Care in Maywood California, it was a narrow space for the large amount of people that were inside. As I waited for the interview with the director of this program, Eugenio Venegas, I observed how joyous people looked. At nine in the morning, the seniors in the center were very active doing their weekly swap meet gathering. On this day, the people in this program are allowed to bring anything they wish to sell among themselves, it ranged from clothes, blankets and objects. Those who wouldn’t bring anything to sell could either shop if they wish to do so, or engage in other activities such as eating, playing card games and meet up with the nurse to take their blood pressure.…

In “The meaning of King Holiday” Dr. King’s wife, says that MLK day should be a day of service. “What she means by that is how can others others serve after graduating and entering the “adult” world?” Well like MLK he didn't know what to do with his life after graduating and yet after his lifetime all races have equal rights. But the movement and doctor King would not be intimidated and with the help of federal troops by order of LBJ they marched through the most dangerous area in the south and went to its capital, montgomery, Alabama. This success led to the cause of various other marches and eventually LBJ was able to successfully push through the voting rights act of 1965. This act prohibits racial discrimination in voting and with it MLK accomplished two of his goals. With the act passing it became a major success and showed immensely two years later when they saw how the massive increase in voter registration in blacks as German Lopez states in his article on voting rights “ ...black voter registration rates in Mississippi increased from a mere 6.7 percent in 1965 to 59.8 percent in 1967…”(German Lopez, 2015). This left the biggest goal of the movement left to accomplish, true equality, and it would be a goal that would take MLK until his death to fight for and even then…

“Incident” by Countee Cullen, “Ballad of Birmingham” by Dudley Randall, and the film, The Help, demonstrate the dangers of prejudice and the struggle for acceptance by African Americans during the civil rights movement. The background, overall plot, and most importantly, the interactions of the characters play an important role in the demonstration of this theme. This theme connects to Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a holiday celebrating the efforts of Martin Luther King Jr. during the fight for civil rights. While prejudice still exists in America today, it occurs to a much lesser extent partly due to the legacy of King and his passion for equality. Prejudice, an unwarranted and opposing viewpoint towards a person stemming from that individual’s…
