Is Lying Acceptable? You know your friend cheated on the state test, and you know if they fail the test her or his dad will beat them, what do you do? Simple you lie, lying can save people from dangerous situations or harm such as that one. Everyone lies, from kids to adults and it’s up to the individual to decide if it’s wrong or not. I believe that lying is repugnant unless it’s used to protect the feelings of others or to keep someone away from a dangerous situation. In my opinion, lying is justified when it’s used to protect the feelings of others. For example, “It’s the Truth”, by NBC News, Cohen states that, “Your fictional spouse, about to accept a nobel prize, asks if they look fat. “If you’re on the way to the award ceremony, you say “ You look fabulous,” Cohen instructs. “ anything else would be cruel.” This is important because it shows that lying is a necessity to protect the feelings of others. Another way to say this is that Cohen supports the claim that you’re required to lie to protect the feelings of others and to keep the …show more content…
As evidence, in the article, “The U.S. Political Campaign”, by Paul Gray states that “Anne Frank survived as long as she did because those sheltering her and he family lied to the nazis.” This connects to my argument because this shows that sometimes you have to lie in order to protect someone from a life or death situation. What I mean by this is lying is tolerable when it comes down to a dangerous situation. Additionally, in the article, “It's the Truth”, by NBC News, Cohen states that “An obvious example is when you’re lying to protect someone from serious harm.” To put this in another way, you need to lie to keep someone away from serious harm. This means that lying is a necessity to keep someone safe. In brief, lying is acceptable when you use it to protect someone from a life or death situation or from a dangerous

In her essay, “The Ways We Lie,” Ericsson shows the different ways one can lie for protection. These ways include dismissal, ignoring the plain facts, and others that do not include telling a lie per se. A Father in a church was molesting children in the 1960’s and the ecclesiastical authorities moved him to a new church, rather than acknowledging his actions (Ericsson 2). The authorities lied to no one, yet to Ericsson that still classifies as a lie. Her essay makes the reader aware of how he lies everyday…

“You never look good trying to make someone else feel bad,” this quote alone speaks volumes. How can someone just lie on an innocent individual just to protect their wrongdoings and continue on with life without feeling guilty? But at the same time, this game called lying is the “new black”. Many individuals today in society and from the previous eras failed to realize that “if you just tell the truth, you don’t have to remember anything.” Mainly because when someone has told a lie they must create many lies after that to keep up with their story and it becomes too much and they begin to forget the first lie they even told.…

Studies show that lying is sometimes acceptable in certain situations to prevent any harm that can be brought on an individual. Lying to protect an individual secures the situation by sugar coating a lie that is being performed. Misleading someone can cause harm such as trust issues and that reflects badly on the person who is lying. Lying must be taken into consideration when it could protect one another. For Example, in the article “It’s the Truth: Americans Conflicted About Lying” by Randy Cohen says, ¨In the AP-Ipsos poll, 65 percent of those questioned said it was sometimes OK to lie to avoid hurting someone's feelings.”…

Lying is never ethically okay, yet it is done on a daily basis and is therefore more widely accepted by various people. Generally, lying should be avoided, but there are many situations where it is justified. Instinctive lies, or lies that you automatically tell on the spot are usually ok because it is part of human nature to instinctively lie to protect ourselves. However, planned lies, like stories that you make up on the go or false ideas that you think of before expressing them should never be allowed. For example, if someone were to ask you if you ate the last piece of cake, depending on their tone of voice, for many, their first instinct would be to say, “No!,” without even thinking.…
