Why is Low Birth Weight Bad? A baby with low birthweight may be at increased risk for complications. The baby 's tiny body is not as strong and he or she may have a harder time eating, gaining weight, and fighting infection. A low birth weight is considered babies under 5.5 pounds or very low birth weight is 3.25 pounds or less. According to March of Dimes preliminary data for 2012, 7.99 percent of infants were born at low birth weight, including 1.42 percent who were born at very low birth weight. 15 million babies are born prematurely each year word wide and 1 million will die. A few things that can cause a premature or low birth weight baby are smoking, low weight gain during pregnancy, increase in maternal age / being too young, or social factors. However, there are ways to help prevent it as well, for instance, stop smoking, check with your doctor before becoming pregnant, or take care of yourself. Tobacco smoke has well been determined to have caused pregnant women to be twice as likely to have a low-birth weight baby.
