Is Love the Meaning of Life and the Key to Happiness?
“Love will turn the whole world into something greater than itself” (Oliver). This is not merely a quote, it is a reflection of truth and the world. Love is a force more powerful than any weapon. Martin Luther King was one of the most famous love spreaders in history. His love turned the world into something greater than itself, and it is still evolving today because of him, nearly fifty years after his death (Assassination). Love is eternal. Although some may argue that money is the key to happiness, love, above all, is in fact the meaning of life and the key to happiness because it produces endorphins, promotes long-term physical and mental health, and is, simply put, magical. Some people are so cynical that they actually believe that money is the meaning of life. “It is better to live in a wealthy country than a poorer one… Clearly, without money to meet basic needs for food, shelter, health, and security, people become downtrodden and unable to thrive” (Greenberg) This source argues that money is necessary to leading a comfortable life, which creates happiness, which is what life is all about. While I do not disagree that happiness is wildly important, I disagree with the statement’s premise that money leads to a good life. Sure, money can create stability to a certain extent, affording a nice house in a nice neighborhood, a nice car, food on the table, the able to travel and experience life. But as I said, this is only to a certain extent. It only goes so far. Money is a material, man made object used to purchase material, man made objects. There is nothing special about that. Maybe I am a romantic, but how can you tell me that life is all about working and earning and saving and spending something in order to make myself happy? Life is about something much greater than that, much more powerful.

My economics teacher once told me a revised version of an old cliche. “Money doesn’t buy happiness, but it can provide security, which can help protect your happiness.” This is true, to a large extent. Happiness in life stems from one’s relationships with people and experiences, something that wealth will not provide. That said, having enough in the bank to not have to worry and stress about paying bills and basic expenses will go a long way in terms of reducing anxiety and allowing time to find a true source of happiness.…

Contrary to the popular belief that money can’t buy happiness, money does in fact contribute to happiness. First, researchers have found that wealthier nations reported overall higher life satisfaction than poorer nations. Psychologists Ed Diener and Robert Biswas-Diener present evidence showing that “the correlation between income and happiness is .82,” revealing that the two are obviously linked (163). Also, money undeniably allows people to satisfy their basic needs, which is imperative to attaining happiness. Although we often take our security for granted, living with a lack of money would adversely affect our current lives.…

The poem I chose, “Happiness” by Jane Kenyon, describes what happiness truly is. It tells a story of who it comes to, and how happiness comes to everyone no matter what the situation is. The poem says in the beginning 2 paragraphs how happiness is always there and that it “saved its most extreme form for you alone”. I believe what the Kenyon is trying to say at that moment is that you have the power to be happy, even when you are alone. The poem also has very specific examples of who happiness comes to.…

Happiness Such a powerful word in American culture Much of my life, I had thought of happiness as a rather nebulous term. I also had some impressions that because I was fortunate enough to have been born in a first world country, happiness was just part of the package. That general disengaged and not important perspective changed about a decade ago when my wife and I learned that she had cancer. I needed to do some inner reflection for strength and direction.…

At times, the reading could leave one feeling slightly perplexed, and aside from the contradicting encouragements, readers would certainly gain a little more perspective on money from this piece. Whenever someone reads the title, “Yes, Money Can Make You Happy,” they may start reading the article under the impression that its main purpose is shallow and or pointless, only to quickly realize that the article’s true purpose is to exploit money’s misinterpretations and the fact that it can help someone to help themselves, and in more ways than one may expect. Proclaiming that an article such as this one could alone alter an individual’s thought process on how to correctly spend money would be dishonest, but it could unquestionably cause one to reevaluate their…

During the 1920’s, America was the place for a beacon of opportunity which is non-existent in other places. Many believed up until this point that it was difficult to become rich; however, with Prohibition and illegal activity, money became easily accessible. Instead of striving for hard-working ideals, it became clear that people were wanting to get rich anyway possible. New York is the central area for this activity, known for its parties, high population, and downtown atmosphere. Jay Gatsby is the perfect exemplar for self-made wealth during this time.…

Last week in the discussion, I felt blown away by the different point of views on different situations with money. This discussion genuinely opened my eyes since I never looked at the world in a dissecting, and realistic way especially towards money. For myself, my values are to make sure that my health, my needs, and family needs are all being taken care of everyday. However, when I was asked what would I take a $30,000 job and be satisfied, or a $60,000 job and be miserable.…

Also because someone could have money, but could also have a mental illness. For example, if a famous person is going through some metal problems and is not happy, but they still have money which is not making things better.
