Argumentative Essay Leadership is NOT a Title nor Position
A leader is a mature person who is head of a group, organization, or a country(dictionary). Ralph and Jack continuously fight and argue throughout the book about who should be the leader of the boys. In Lord of the Flies by William Golding, Ralph and Jack each have leadership qualities. People tend to follow the powerful person, which is called their leader. However, Ralph is a better leader because he embraces democracy and civilization throughout the book.
A characteristic that Ralph display of being a better leader is democracy. One reason he is democratic is because he suggested that they should have a vote on who should be leader. For example, “Let’s have a vote. Yes! Vote for chief”(Golding 11)! He is willing to vote for chief to show who should lead the group, Jack never thought of an idea to conclude the …show more content…
For example, he is civilized because he well-mannered and thoughtful. As stated in Lord of the Flies, “We can't have everyone talking at once. We'll have hands up' like at school. Then I'll give him the conch.”(Golding 33).By being civilized, everyone listens to what all the boys on the island had to say. The protagonist was able to understand every boy’s point of view about anything on the island.For instance, “That’s what this shell’s called. I’ll give the conch to the next person to speak. He can hold it when he’s speaking”(Golding 21). In Lord of the Flies, the conch symbolized order, and encourage the boys to have respect and pace for each other.
Ralph is a great head of commander because he do not think like a kid. As stated in Children in the Middle Ages , “Duties children were expected to perform were usually simple”(Newman 1). The protagonist takes on a role that children should not take, but he is willing to help the boys on the island with civilization and democracy
