Why Is Lizzie Borden Innocent

Improved Essays
Lizzie Borden took an axe and gave her mother 40 whacks, when she saw what she had done she gave her mother 41. This case has been studied for over 100 years and is still unsolved. Lizzie was guilty of murdering Abby, her step-mother and Andrew Borden, her father. Although there is little evidence that Lizzie could be innocent, there is much more evidence to show that Lizzie is guilty. To begin with, Lizzie was over dramatic about some things, especially the arguments with Abby and Andrew. During the trial Lizzie stated that there was a disagreement about Abby’s sister-in-law getting a house from Andrew six years before the murders, which led to bad tension between Abby and Lizzie. Since that uproar, Lizzie was very disrespectful towards Abby …show more content…
Lizzie had even mentioned in the trial that since the argument she didn’t eat with the family and was mostly in her room away from them. No one would get so mad as to quit calling their only mom figure, mother and not want to kill them. As has been noted, Lizzie showed signs of hatred and showed reasons she would want to kill Abby. Lizzie just couldn’t seem to get her stories straight. For the most part, Lizzie was a compulsive liar and that was clear to see. At the beginning of the trial Lizzie had said she was wearing a blue dress, but, and I quote according to the website law2.umkc.edu “They figured in the afternoon I should change”. Lizzie was giving an excuse for her to change since the murders were committed after 11, not in the afternoon. With this known, during the week of the trial Lizzie made a very idiotic decision. Lizzie had burned a blue dress, which she said she accidentally brushed against wet paint but there was no evidence of a painting found in the house. Lizzie was not as clever as she thought. In that case, Lizzie’s behavior during the trial didn’t seem to add up and was very suspicious. Not only was the dress situation very peculiar but also her stories about where she was during the

Lizzie Borden killed her parents. Lizzie was the only other person in her house when her mom was murdered, her dad was running errands, her sister out of town and the maid was outside cleaning the windows. The maid said she heard Lizzie laugh around 10:30 as she was upstairs, which isn’t long after the murder took place. Lizzie was found burning one of her dresses and when asked what was on it she said paint which was really blood, she burned a dress with paint on it besides just throwing it away. You could argue that Lizzie didn’t kill her parents but Lizzie wouldn’t of been the only one in the house at the time of the murder, heard laughing upstairs not long after the murder took place and found burning the dress she wore on the day of the…

In, “Could a Woman Do That?” and countless other articles, it is shown that Lizzie had burned the dress she was wearing at the time of the murders because it “had brown paint stains” (Gustafson 47). If so, one must ask the question, why burn the dress instead of washing it? The answer to that question: because the brown stains in question were her parents’ blood because Lizzie Borden was the Killer. If she did kill her parents, this is not her first attempt. In, “Experts Cast Cold Eye over Evidence” Lizzie had “tried to buy a prussic acid, a deadly poison” (Davis paragraph 26).…

I think Abigail definitely perpetuated the trials and suspects to cover her lies. She was getting a charm to help murder her lover’s wife, if anyone found out she’d be killed for attempted murder despite the witchcraft claims. She knew she was in deep trouble once she was caught. She is trying to pass the blame. As seen on Page 48 in Act 1, Abigail is literally pulling names out of thin air to toss into the mysterious suspect list.…

Arthur Miller’s play, The Crucible, is a partially fictionalized account of the Salem witch trials. Miller depicts Salem as a community filled with mass paranoia and fear that leads to the an atmosphere in which everyone was a potential witch. The story is centered on John Proctor and tells the story of the witchcraft accusations that lead to his death. Many people blame his death and the death of many others on Abigail Williams, a young woman whose lies lead to the death of many innocent victims. However, it’s difficult to blame one particular character when so many others are complicit in the abomination of the Salem Witch Trials.…

In this case it has obviously claimed Abigail Williams because in her case she was so jealous of Elizabeth Proctor, she created this whole scheme or witchery to reach her end goal: John Proctor. Abigail is a master manipulator if she hadn’t lied about the girls playing around as witchcraft to try and kill goody proctor the trials never would have proceeded. The Salem Witch Trials were a bloody time in colonial America during the 1600’s, depicted in Arthur Miller 's play, The Crucible. The events of the trials in the play are dramatically depicted, although the plot gives an accurate prediction of what would happen during a time of mass hysteria. Many characters have contributed to the mass hysteria, but some are more to blame than others. The character Mary Warren is more to blame than the character Abigail Williams because Mary is easily manipulated, has switched sides during the trials, and was not forthright with evidence.…

In Act 1, Betty Parris also reveals that Abigail had tried to harm Elizabeth using witchcraft (“You drank a charm to kill Goody Proctor!”), following which Abigail became violent and told her never to disclose that fact. Hence, we can see that getting revenge on Elizabeth Proctor was a matter of great personal importance to Abigail. She does so by accusing Elizabeth of witchcraft and Danforth believes her and Elizabeth is arrested. When Elizabeth was tried later, much of the evidence against her was Abigail's word against hers, and although she was never convicted or sentenced like the other victims, the mere fact that she, a respected farmer’s wife, could be convicted shows that the law then was being manipulated by Abigail for motives like vengeance. John…

The Crucible The Crucible is a play written in 1952 by Arthur Miller. This book relates to what we have studied this semester because it is centered around the Salem Witchcraft Trials that occurred in Massachusetts in 1692. My junior year of high school, we were required to read both the play and the movie and it is something that I will never forget. The scene that always come to my mind when I think of The Crucible is when the opening scene where Tituba and some of the girls are practicing witchcraft around a fire late at night in the middle of the woods. I also think of the end scene in which 19 people were hanged.…

After Proctor refuses to have her anymore, she plans to take Elizabeth out through having her accused and hanged for witchcraft. “Abigail were stabbed tonight; a needle were found stuck in her belly-” (Miller 72). This excerpt displays how committed Abigail was to her cause since she was not above hurting herself in order to condemn Elizabeth. She becomes fully devoted to accusing people of witchcraft in order to sentence Elizabeth and unfortunately it takes time for people to question her truthfulness because Abby is very convincing and has a strong following of people behind her.…
