He was taught to avoid letting others know his thoughts, which has led to sharp disagreement about his intelligence. In 1770 he married the Austrian archduchess Marie-Antoinette, daughter of Maria Theresa and the Holy Roman emperor Francis I. On May 10, 1774 he officially became the king, but he was still young, immature, and lack of experience. He was not confident, but he was well-disposed toward his subjects and interested in the conduct of foreign policy. He did not have enough power and strength of character and decision to combat the influence of court factions or to give the necessary support to reforming ministers. He reversed Louis XV’s and Chancellor René Maupeou’s controversial attempt in late 1774 to reduce the powers of the parliament which had been undertaken in 1772. Although this change was pretty popular, it was contradicted with the ideas of some other major reforms. He spent way too much money to fight wars which almost led to the bankruptcy of the government.
