Marcus Cicero was the greatest orator ancient Rome produced, and in 64 BC he was running for the highest office, consul. With the political system being corrupt and broken, Cicero wanted nothing more than to help restore the system and save the republic. With lack of political experience, he felt that he was hindered (Freeman, 2012). While Marcus Cicero was running for consul, Quintus Cicero was in the senate of Rome (Wills, 2012). Since Quintus was more worldly and down-to-earth, he helped his brother by writing him a straight forward guide for winning elections. He upheld the interest of the senate, and was one of the few politicians who tried to analyze the problems of the Republic (Spielvogel). While in consul, Cicero was responsible for exposing the Catiline conspiracy. They were trying to take over Rome by force. Cicero put five of the conspirators to death without giving them a trial first. Over the next few years Cicero’s loyalty to the Senate left him vulnerable. In 58 BCE, a proposed law, stating that anyone who kills a Roman citizen without a trial will be stripped of their citizenship, caused a riot and Cicero was exiled from the city and could not live within 500 miles of Italy (By Antony's Orders Herennius Cut off His Head and His Hands). The advice that Quintus gave to Marcus is still relevant in politics today. Politicians today must win over important people and the common people. They must make themselves look good in the eye of the public, and can promote themselves to the public. Politics is still full of deceit and betrayal, just like it was in 64 BCE.
