In Salem, Massachusetts 1600s there began the witch trials. In the play The Crucible written by Arthur Miller he explains what people were feeling and how they reacted including John Proctor. John Proctor was a farmer who everyone respected, he had a wife and three kids. Towards the end of the book he was asked to confess to witchery to stay alive.John proctor did the right thing by denying that he was a witch even tho he died because of it.
First, John did write that he was a witch but the court wanted to post it in the middle of the town for everyone could see and he wouldn't allow that because his kids would remember what a sell out he would be.”How may I live without my name? He said this because he knows that he already lied about the being a witch so he can be with his kids but having it shown to everyone his kids won't be able to let it down. Since John Proctor was really respected if he did confess the town would just keep believing in witches because the most respected guy in town is a witch. Also if he confessed he would be free but people in town would probably go kill him because they think he is a witch. So he was going to die anyways it was just between stopping others from dying as well. John Proctor did the right thing by not confessing. People know are questioning if there is actual witches and his kids can say my dad was an honest
