Why Is John Proctor Admirable

Improved Essays
The Crucible
The most admirable in the play is John Proctor, a local farmer and husband of Elizabeth Proctor. The reason I believed he’s admirable because he took the time to investigate the situation, and did not just take other people’s word for it. He had a lot to lose, it was his wife also being accused. The message Miller portrayed through this character is courage to tell the truth, and stand for what is right and just. John Proctor had an affair with Abigail, and even though that was a sin, he understood that witchcraft was a different offense to God. While John and Hale tries to convince Governor Thomas Danforth that Abigail and the girl’s pretense, through every case that’s in the court, Danforth wouldn’t budge to believe him. “This is not witchcraft! Those girls are frauds! You condemn an honest man!”(Hale,,Act III ). Condemning John Proctor, didn’t have much choice.

While many believe that John Proctor is not an admirable character, he went through many things, such as adultery, He has also tried to confess that he has done witchery, although he was betrayed by Mary Warren. As of result, stay true to yourself, and confess when you know you are to be chosen as a guilty

In The Crucible, John Proctor is the most admirable character and Abigail is the least admirable. John Proctor stands with his word. If he says he is going to do something, he is going to do it. He always tries to do the right thing no matter the circumstances. After discovering Proctor’s secret meeting with Abigail where the two discussed the standing of the witch trials and how it “was all just sport”; Elizabeth made her husband promise to tell Danforth about what Abigail has told him. Despite her obvious discontent with Proctor’s secrecy in the sense of “back[ing] away” from his kiss, Elizabeth soon forgave her husband when trial came. As Proctor risked his own “name” to end the dreaded trials, Elizabeth sought only to protect her beloved husband, compelling her to lie for his sake. Having redeemed himself (John Proctor), Elizabeth would argue her husband’s honor and…

If Proctor would have been open and honest with the judges about Abigail, all the accusations would have been prevented. Also, John’s lust can be seen when he talks to his wife after his return home from Salem. Elizabeth faintly remarked, “You were alone with her?” John replies, “For a moment alone, aye” (167). Here, the reader can see that Proctor still has feelings for Abigail even though he knew the trouble it would cause.…

John openly declares that he has not been to church lately and only two of his boys have been baptized because he disagrees with the way Parris preaches and sees, “no light of God” (Miller 62) in him. Another example of his fearlessness is when Proctor publicly admits to his relationship with Abigail. During this time period, the majority of people living in Salem are Puritans and have overly strict rules and beliefs. For John to admit that he cheated on his wife will ruin his reputation and character, but he reveals this information to the judges anyways to try and save all of the accused. John Proctor is proven to be daring when he rips…

The quote shows that he denies what he did because it was wrong, and he also doesn’t want anyone to know so he doesn’t get condemned for adultery. But, at the end of the play, John Proctor proves that he is a really sorry man by confessing to Hawthorne that he did have an affair with Abigail: “I have known her, sir. I have known her” (Miller 110). This shows how John Proctor went from putting the affair aside and keeping it secret, to admitting his actions, showing his forgiveness, and becoming a moral and honest person. In Act 2, Hale is tasked to give word to Elizabeth that her name has been mentioned in the court, meaning that she could possibly be one of the accused. Proctor does not believe what he is hearing at first, but then he physically starts to react to the accusations and suspicion from Hale. When Hale begins to discreetly accuse the Proctors, John becomes, “flushed with resentment”(62), and regrettably admits that he does not believe that there is such a thing as witchcraft in the world. This statement causes the townspeople to become more suspicious of John, because at the time they believed that in order to believe in God, you had to also believe in the Devil and his wickedness. So by Proctor openly dismissing the Devil, he is inadvertently dismissing God.…

With each line, the guilt and regret within John Proctor becomes more and more apparent. He is fully aware of the severity of his past actions, and all he asks for is a miniscule amount of mercy. Later in the play, John Hale becomes suspicious of the accusations the young girls are making. The action of John Proctor in this play severely tests Hale’s faith and duty. For example, Hale supports the court and all of their decisions for most of the duration of the story, until he realizes it’s not right. When John Proctor is accused and Abigail Williams starts convincing the court of many things that seem too far fetched, he becomes very suspicious.…
