Why Is John F Kennedy A Hero

August 2, 1943. An American Lieutenant, 27 years of age, was with his crew of 13 aboard a PT boat near Japanese waters. It was late at night. Suddenly, the Lieutenant spotted in the darkness the outline of a boat coming straight towards them. At first he mistook it for a fellow PT boat-no cause for alarm. Yet as it came closer, he realized what it was: A Japanese destroyer. He made an attempt at the guns and tried to move out of the way, but it was too late. The PT boat was hit by the enormous destroyer and nearly all of the crew were spewed out, several of them swallowing toxic amounts of gasoline. The PT boat was damaged irreparably. John Kennedy, the Lieutenant, was quick to act. After rallying the men and finding that two of them were missing, probably killed by the impact, the remaining eleven set out for the nearest island, three and a half miles away. Kennedy himself towed a man who could barely swim by holding the strap of the man's life vest in his teeth. When he finally reached the island, he collapsed. No one knew if they would ever be rescued, or if they would find food enough to survive. But it didn't matter. Kennedy had done the best he could, and he was a hero. John F.
