Why Is Jet B's Lighter Composition

Decent Essays
Jet B is a fuel in the naphtha-kerosene region that is used for its enhanced cold-weather performance. However, Jet B's lighter composition makes it more dangerous to handle. For this reason, it is rarely used, except in very cold climates. A blend of approximately 30% kerosene and 70% gasoline, it is known as wide-cut fuel. It has a very low freezing point of −60 °C (−76 °F), and a low flash point as well. It is primarily used in some military aircraft. It is also used in Canada, Alaska, and sometimes Russia, because of its low freezing

In this Beanium lab, the objective was to make sense of the numbers used to calculate average atomic mass. By separating, counting, and weighing beans we were able to create the numbers used to calculate the weight of one bean. From there, we could use the total number of beans to produce the percent abundance for each type of bean. These were the numbers that we had to produce in order to understand how and why there are many types of isotopes for each element. In doing this lab, we can think through the importance of finding the average atomic mass and not just using a single isotope for an element.…

The system will “help first responders to deal with the hazardous materials present quickly and safely.” , (FEMA, 2013, Unit 2, P.2-1). For example, the Materials Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) provides “recommended extinguishing media (water, foam, dry chemical, carbon dioxide, graphite, etc.) for fire.” (FEMA, 2013, unit 3, P. 4), in case of a chemical attack so that responders can determine quickly how to deal with identified active agent. Similarly in the case of an attack where unknown agents might be released, such as an attack on a factory, transportation tankers, or storage facility, the systems provide responders with a quick way to identify the material they are potentially facing.…

Pilots in the First World War had to fly at high altitudes and high speed therefore it would be extremely cold so to prevent them from freezing they not only have to put on many layers but they must also put on some whale oil. This was essential to the war because without it they would either have no planes in the sky or every pilot that went up came back down with more than just a cold meaning nobody would dare to go up into the skies without any planes we surely would have lost the war because they went just for dog fights they could also be used to drop bombs in enemy territory and for spying on the enemy. This may not be a daily use but is used for every trip that is why it was needed in the great war.…

The most useful fuel out of the three fuels is Octan-1-ol. This is due to it having the highest combustion rate therefore it would heat water or cook food at higher temperatures but will take a slower time than the other two. Octan-1-ol also had a bright flame due to incomplete combustion therefore it would be a good fuel to have as a light source as it also takes a while to burn the amount of fuel out so it will last for a long time. Octan-1-ol would also be a good heat source.…

The purpose of this lab is to understand the effect that dissolved impurities will have on the freezing point of a mixture and what additive will affect the the freezing point the most. The freezing point of a liquid is, the point of a substance when the temperature of the solid and the liquid is equal. When water freezes the water molecules become organized and come closer together forming crystal particles of ice. When a solute (like salt) and a solvent (like water) mix together the salt becomes an impurity and makes it so the solution can’t crystallize.…
