Jesus, Jesus Christ, Jesus the Messiah, Emmanuel; who is he? The answers to this may heavily depend on who you ask, where they grew up, and what their religious background is. There are as many answers as there are people, even among those that claim Jesus as their personal Lord and Savior, there are many subtle and not so subtle nuances in the answers that are given. Because of this vast array of differences, it is important to try to understand the basics that run true for most Christians. p. 120. Many argue over just how relevant this statement is, and how literal to take the scriptures that speak of Jesus as the Son of God while he was on earth and made of flesh. High Christology views Jesus as God’s son which make him different that any other human for, Jesus took on human form, but did not lose his relationship as son of God, nor did he lose his divinity. He was set apart and chosen. The resurrection shows that God himself views him different than any other human form, “For God so loved the world that he that he gave his only begotten Son.” John 3:16 p 143. To redeem is to buy back, to make right, to compensate for faults, or to make new again. So Jesus redeemed us from our sins, he reconciled us to God, before Jesus, our sin set us apart from God; he had laws in place for humanity to follow that seemed impossible to keep, and in truth they are impossible to keep all the time because we are in nature, fallible. God knew this and made a way out for us, Jesus. Jesus’s human life without sin was an example that maybe we have a little more control of our actions than we once thought, however, his example was not enough. God loves us and he made a way for us to come to him and to be holy before him. Jesus took on the role of sacrifice for us. In the old testament God commanded religious leaders to sacrifice animals as a symbol of repentance of sins, the animal was the price that was paid. Jesus was sacrificed for us, the ultimate sacrifice for all of the worlds sins so that anyone that accepted him could come to God. As a believer we should be cognizant of the price that was paid and what it allowed us to do. Not to go off and do whatever we want, and say oh, I am forgiven, but to be thankful for the sacrifice and grateful for what we have. P 159-160. The sacrifice of Jesus also bares a daily understanding for Christian in that the gift of Jesus has enabled us to be better people and to give of our self to others.
