Why Is It Unfair To Have Dress Codes In Schools

Lawrence High School provides a lot of freedom for the student but there is one rule that I think is absurd and completely unfair to girls which, is the dress code. In the handbook that is handed out to every student at LHS it says “This dress code was developed with a concern for modesty, safety and the general good order of the school.” What I don’t understand is how does wearing more clothes make it safer? Also I would strongly disagree that this is modest. Yes there is a line that should not be crossed with our dress code but it is too strict. If you are a boy then this may not be your concern but the least anyone could do is believe that is it unfair which obviously it is.
The first rule that is written says “Students may not wear: transparent clothes, clothes with exaggerated slits, low cut shirts, spaghetti strap tops, one-sleeve shirts, strapless shirts, halter tops of any kind, backless shirts (any shirt with the entire back showing), bare midriffs, muscle shirts that are not fitted around the arm, clothing that exposes any type of undergarment,”. I agree that girls should not wear clothes that expose any undergarments but what I do not agree with is how students aren’t allowed to wear spaghetti

Some schools don’t allow collarbone to show or shoulder and in all schools we all have consequences. This is unacceptable to punish kids for wearing the clothes they want to wear to express themselves. Our education is more important than what boys think about the clothing we wear because dressing ourselves is an important part for some people’s days and when we get dress coding this is taking away the right. They take these rules to the next level and if schools want our dress code to be so strict then schools should just have a uniform if girls can barely express what they want to. I think all as long as girls don’t show any inappropriate parts of their body it's ok to show a little bit of

I have decided to write this journal article on an article that I found online that speaks directly to experiences that I had throughout middle school and high school. The article is titled, “The Sexism of School Dress Codes”. A young girl named Maggie Sunseri noticed that the dress codes in her school were geared more directly to girls than it was to boys. At first, Maggie rightfully saw this concept to be unfair. The rationale that the administrators gave behind this idea, however, was even more upsetting to Maggie.…

I would understand some inappropriate clothes with bad messages to restrict, but why do you think 99.99% are not appropriate to be worn at school. What I've come to experience with the dress down is a negative. I remember waking up knowing we had a dress down to not worry about putting my uniform in the washer/dryer. I just threw a t-shirt and a pair of shorts, and I come to school and apparently I just violated the dress code.…

In conclusion, I believe that the shoulder and bra strap dress code rule should be ameliorated or changed. It makes girls feel uncomfortable and insecure in their own skin. It teaches them to be ashamed of their perfectly-normal body parts, and most of the time they already feel bad enough. Lastly, females shouldn’t be concerned about wearing a shirt that reveals their shoulders so that male students can have better focus. A shoulder is a shoulder, and a bra strap is a bra strap, they will not debauch male students.…

Dress codes standards send home students every day, all over the country, for being too revealing. Most are girls, and on occasions, boys that struggle with the standards, therefore they should be lowered. It’s taking away from your class time, limits self-expression, and the rules can sometimes not be correctly administered are all problems caused by dress codes standards. The dress code can take away from class time because everyone is more concerned with how we are dressed, rather than worrying about if we’ll do good on our next math test, or studying for the history final. During class, teachers can stop their lesson to tell one of their students that they are violating dress codes, therefore taking time away from class and from other students learning for something that is not relevant outside of school.…

At their core, they establish a baseline to uphold in terms of modesty for the facility. In more common terms, the goal of dress codes is to create a distraction-free learning zone. According to the student handbook, students are expected to “dress in appropriate attire which does not distract or offend others” (Source G). Gregg Ingersoll, the superintendent of Anglophone East School District, states that most dress codes are designed to try to keep the focus on the learning instead of the parts of a body that may or may not be exposed (“"School dress codes 'demeaning'”). The underlying reason for such an environment, as deemed by many schools, is the intent to protect girls from the biological impulses of their male peers.…

When teachers give dress code violations to a girl for wearing shorts that are too short or because her choice in clothing is ‘innappropriate’, you are telling her that hiding her body and normal female parts (such as stomach, shoulders or thighs) is more important than her education. You are also telling her that a boys’ disturbance-free learning is more significant than her disturbance-free learning. Obviously some degree of dress code is important but shoulders, stomach and thighs should not be classed as inappropriate or distracting. The school dress code treats males and females differently.…

We all know that group of girls who show up to school with their breast popping out of their shirts, butts hanging out of their shorts, and belly shirts that show way too much skin. Obviously, dressing like this to school is in no way appropriate, and should be addressed. Another argument of why the dress code should be enforced is the fact that school is a learning environment and that we should be teaching kids how to dress for the future. By doing this, you are helping young adults understand that wearing a crop top or (for boys) wearing saggy pants to an interview definitely won’t get you a job. Others may say that enforcing the dress code, like providing school uniforms, will help families that are in poverty and will decrease bullying when it comes to making fun of someone’s…

Dress codes teach girls that their bodies are sexual and that they are distracting to boys. By constantly pushing the rules about covering the shoulders or making sure your shorts are at the knee, makes it so that anything shorter or more revealing is too sexy. Dress codes make the problem worse, because the more taboo something is, the more it intrigues students and teens to look or be “distracted”. The dress code tells girls that their bodies are provocative and they are forced to cover up because if they don't then they will get harassed, because that's what they think will make a difference. The dress code teaches girls that their bodies are sexual and that boys cannot handle themselves, just because a girl's shoulder is showing.…
