There was a warm satisfaction I always felt prior to rallies as I frantically rushed around ensuring everyone was on the right cue. I was passionate about rallies because they were the one event where groups from different parts of the school congregated to support one another. Junior year, I became pep commissioner and was delegated with the task of directing rallies for the year. Upon being handed the job, I was left with no guidance since the previous pep commissioner graduated. As a result, I persevered learning from my mistakes with each rally as the year progressed. Consequently, I wanted to ensure that the next pep commissioner would have a foundation to build upon to make the rallies better the following year instead of starting from scratch which was normally the case.

Irene Lee, the new pep commissioner, was just as confused as me when I started. For the first rally, I offered to mentor her. I handed her all my previously organized schedules, list of contacts, as well as all budget sheets, however, I was not prepared the questions she asked my about decision making. “Should I do what I feel is right or what ASB feels? “What is the most effective way to get ideas from everyone?” I was not sure what to say since these questions did not ask how to plan a rally rather they were questions regarding how to lead a rally. In turn, I realized mentoring Irene challenged who I was as a leader and how I could use my knowledge as one to influence her to become one as well. I became her go-to for advice for the first few rallies until she developed a voice of her own.
