Why Is It Important To Just Be Kids?

Improved Essays
Kids are assigned way too much homework on top of all of their afterschool activities, such as football, dance, horseback riding, baseball, softball, or any other sport or activity. So, do kids have enough time to just be kids? The answer is no. “To have them work six hours a day at school and then go home and work for hours at night does not seem right. It doesn’t allow them to have a childhood.” (Diane Garfield) We work for six hours a day at school for 5 days a week, and there is almost never a day for us to just relax and be kids. “Kids today are overwhelmed!” (Marian Wilde)This is true for many reasons. Kids activities can last for up to 2-3 hours for sometimes multiple days a week. And in some cases kids have to go home and …show more content…
“In fact, a study last year showed that the impact of excessive homework of high schoolers included high stress levels, a lack of balance in children’s lives, and physical health problems such as ulcers, migraines, sleep deprivation and weight loss.” (Kelly Wallace) If homework can cause all this, is it even worth it to cause all of these health issues in students? “The current study also examined the stress homework places on families and found that as the parent’s confidence in their ability to help their child with homework went down, he stress in the household went up.” (Kelly Wallace) When parents are unable to help their kids with their homework it puts more stress on the family because they are worried about understanding the material and ow to the problem. “I believe we’re stressing children out.” (Diane Garfield) Students become so stressed over their homework because even if they did the same thing in class that day they still may not fully understand the concept. Homework obviously stresses everybody out even if they aren’t the ones dng the …show more content…
“...students have too much homework and most of it is not productive or necessary.” (Tona Herring) Homework is taking up time that could be being spent with family. It also just gives you multiple of the same problems even if you understand the subject, which is wasting your time. “Nothing quite stressed out students and parents about the beginning of the school year as the return to homework…” (Kelly Wallace) Is the stress of returning to all this homework really worth it or do we deserve a break? Many students dread going back to school because of the huge amount of homework we have to do. “One homework fact that educators agree upon is that the young child today is doing more homework than ever before.” (Marian Wilde) there is supposed to be a 10 minute rule for each grade (so 80 mins of hw for 8th grade) which is way more homework than we should have. A reasonable amount of homework would be a half hour or 45 minutes. Clearly students have way too much

In the article, “Is Homework Making Your Child Sick?” by Amanda Enayati, the author states the effect homework is having on students in the ten high-performing public and private high schools in California. My Declaration of Independence I am here today to announce my frustration with the amount of homework given on any day. The problem with all of the homework is that some people have other things to do, and may not have time to complete all of the given homework. I think it’s safe to say that the amount of homework is just a bit too much, and not completing all of it seriously can bring down some grades for people. People do not deserve to have homework in every class, almost every day.…

On average, it has been reported that students spend 3.2 hours per night on homework, which is far too much, especially since much of it is likely unnecessary. Modern teachers, primarily math teachers, are under the impression that if a certain type of problem or assignment is easy or takes little time, then they should assign more of it. It is buildup of these types of problems that leads to stress without actually benefitting the student much. According to an interview with Denise Pope, senior lecturer at the Stanford Graduate School of Education and co-author of a study published in the Journal of Experimental Education, she states, “We found a clear connection between the students' stress and physical impacts -- migraines, ulcers and other stomach problems, sleep deprivation and exhaustion, and weight loss,” (Pope 1). It is clear that students are being assigned too much homework, and actions need to be taken against that.…

When they would rather spend time with their friends or participate in a sport, they are stuck home completing assignments in their spare time. Summer work is just the same! Donna St. George a Washington Post writer analyzed limitations on the matter, “Students work on assignments largely without teacher support; summer work can pose grading problems in the fall; and the requirements may overwhelm already-stressed kids who need the break (St. George).” If a student is already stressing over the work that they have to complete, more questions and lack of teacher support will stress them out further.…

Many students are afraid to ask a question because they think it’s a stupid question, and that the other students will make fun of them. Chances are the parents won’t remember the material on the homework because they have been out of school for so long, which adds to the stress they already have from work and whatever else they do during the day. This can also lead to bad grades or wrong teaching by parents if they don’t know the homework. “Maybe students are right to complain about too much homework. A Stanford researcher has found that students in high-achieving communities who spend…
