Why Is It Important To Judge A Book By Its Cover

What I Believe I believe in not judging a book by its cover. I believe that first minute assessments are dangerous to those who they are made about. I am a student so I am always meeting new people and it is important to keep an open mind until you truly know someone. It is through the ability to not judge a book by its cover that one is able to truly understand and form opinions about the people around them.

When I think about not judging a book by its cover, I think about school. In school, it is common for one to get judged and labeled within the first few moments of someone seeing them, even if it was solely based on what that person was wearing that particular day. People can also be labeled by others without even having to say a word. I have witnessed this behavior at Ponax before; someone was labeled negatively and within the first day it became common-thought among most of the students. Furthermore, no one even knew or talked to this individual yet they were looked down upon and treated worse than a stranger should be. And one trying to persevere through

When I was younger, during school, I would notice someone doing something that I thought was absurd or foolish, it was usually when people got an answer wrong either in class or on a test. I would label them as unintelligent, without actually even knowing how smart they were. My whole opinion was based on one question they answered incorrectly. I was talking to one of my teachers, we were joking around when I mentioned the student and how they missed a simple question. When my teacher hears this he stopped laughing and asked me if I knew the kid outside of school and what his life was like. It turns out that the aforementioned student had had trouble with the law in the past, and how that might have affected his ability to focus in

James Howe, the author of The Misfits, is in support of the allowance of books: “Banning books is just another form of bullying. It’s all about fear and an assumption of power.” James elaborates that banning books is a different articulation of bullying. The definition of bullying and censorship do not differentiate abundantly. Bullying is using superior strengths to use force upon someone for their struggle of power.…

It is odd to think that there are so many concerning modern issues that have yet to be resolved, yet educators and parents prevent their children from forming awareness of these issues--by banning books from the school curricula. Many authors attempt at exploiting these societal problems to readers, whether from the past or future, yet skepticism is unfortunately tied with them. Controversy offends many people, though students need to be aware of reality and societal situations. Keeping middle and high school students ignorant, by banning novels, is supposed to prevent prejudice and offense...but does it really help students? John Knowles' A Separate Peace is a highly debated book, whether or not to be included in school curriculums due to…

I wrote more on the issue "Why We Hate The Smart Kids" by Grant Penrod. I'm going to argue with the author on this one because I agree with everything he is trying to teach us in this article. For many students in high school or even college, it's the best time for them, most of them only come for the sports or the debate teams. In any high school, there are many different groups like; the jocks, the boring kids, the stoners, and the nerds. Out of all the groups I have said the one that gets the most heat are the nerds.…

The argument of whether or not banned books should be taught has been debated for years upon years. Why not provide a simple solution that allows each individual decide whether or not they are exposed to these “evil” banned books. This solutions involves creating an option for a class that’s curriculum is based on books that have been challenged or that are or have been banned. This class would still complete the mandatory state standards, which would make it comparable to a normal English class. This is a simple middle ground in which these banned books can still be taught with the lessened worry of offending students, parents, etc.…

Although book banning happens all over the world, the most common challenges occur in school libraries. Most of these battles are fought at the school board level, but on occasions, some do make it to the supreme court. In one of the most famous court cases, in 1982, the Supreme Court ruled in the Board of Education, Island Trees Union Free School District v. Pico. The case however has been regarded as one of the most important decisions concerning the First Amendment rights and school libraries. With this, the Supreme Court set strict parameters under which the board of educators could consider banning a book from it’s selves.…

Me and Ponyboy share a few relatable stories and experiences when we do not use common sense even though we both perform at a fantastic level in school. Like when Darry hits Ponyboy he ran away with Johnny which eventually leads to a Soc getting killed. My similar infamous experience was when I had an argument with my mother and I put up a fuss when I was confined. Unwisely Ponyboy lacked common sense when he thought he could buy Mike Mouse back for Soda but it also makes him generous and caring.…

“An hour with Abuelo” by Judith Ortiz Cofer illustrates the theme, Don’t judge a book by it’s cover, as one of it’s main themes. In the beginning of the story, the narrator Arturo states “ they play checkers and stuff with some of the old people’s game, and I catch up on issues of Modern Maturity” (Ortiz Cofer 592). This shows that the protagonist Arturo is isolated and maybe socially awkward, possibly making him judge people because he doesn’t know much about them. This leading him to not enjoy the first part of the visit to his Grandfather’s, but then the text states “Since I like stories, I decide I may as well ask him if he’ll read me what he wrote” (Ortiz Cofer 593). This explains that the protagonist has found a common interest with his…

To all the doctors, teachers, peers, and family members who didn’t believe I would amount to greatness, thank you. Since the dawn of the pen and pencil, literature has existed to communicate the human experience. There are countless numbers of books in the world, all of which drastically vary in content, size and quality. Despite all of the disparate traits between them, this drive to relay another’s view on life is shared among all literature. However, there are many individuals that seek to suppress these views by banning books from libraries and schools. This desire to ban and suppress an author’s interpretation could arise from a variety of factors: differing ideological viewpoints, aversion to graphic content, or a distaste of a book’s “offensive” subject matter to name a few.…

Summary by Farrukh Shadzad MBA 2 – Evening Program I, before reading this book saw the movie, which motivated me to read the book as well. The name of this book is “The Pursuit of HappYness” written by Chris Garden. The two desires I had when beginning this book were: 1. That it would for the most part be the same story as told in the motion picture with a couple changes that were made for realistic impact - (like no Rubik's 3D square, no night spent in the tram restroom, and no appearing for the meeting shirtless and secured in paint, and so on... 2. That I would not care for Chris Gardner.…
