Reading is undervalued in today’s society. Not many students understand the importance of reading and how useful it is in life. When I was, younger reading was never my strongest subject. Reading at a lower level than others in my class made me feel less educated. It wasn’t like I pushed reading away, it was just something that I wasn’t interested in.…
Weekly e-Journal # 6 Vogt & Shearer Chapter 10 and Bean Chapter 8 integrate the foundational guidelines for a reading specialist/literacy coach to know possible ways to develop a literacy program. Bean's orientation for reading specialist leads to provide guidelines for planning literacy programs for schools or districts; these guidelines encompass the awareness of possible problems of difficulties that the we can find when we develop this kind of programs, the knowledge of what effective schools do in terms of developing programs, and a possible framework to develop literacy programs. Additionally to Bean's points, Vogt & Sheare provide a clear framework for selecting and evaluating instructional and technological materials for literacy programs.…
Young people must be prepared to switch careers readily, and the ability to retrain, no matter the location. Skills of literacy and numeracy are learned long before college or not at all. Crook explains how being illiterate has denied people the option of a prosperous life, from knowledge of culture, to full “civic engagement”. Three out of ten high school seniors to not reach the standard of basic-literacy. Crook talks about how focusing on literacy would pay off with material benefits and also benefits of wider economy.…
Dana Gioia builds an argument to persuade his audience on how the decline in our American arts, specifically literacy, has caused many negative impacts to individuals that don't read regularly. Dana Gioia's paper has informed his audience of young adults, over the importance of literature, and how it helps in social aspects, but most importantly being “advanced” in literature is very “significant in the business world”. A major claim that Dana Gioia mentions in his article, is that “38 percent of employers complained that local schools inadequately taught reading comprehension”. This only supports his view on how our society is quickly losing an “advanced literacy skill”, that could help anyone in any “educational, cultural and economic factors”.…
If these “experienced readers” are so good and still manage to fail in some areas, when are we going to be good enough to carve this skill to perfection. Teachers are into this too, this article refers to both students and teachers because everybody needs to upgrade in something. I observed that Haas and Flower’s article was meant for teachers as well when they said, “Seeing reading as a constructive act encourages us as teachers to move from merely teaching texts to teaching readers” (Haas & Flower 169) as well as “Many of our students are “good” readers” (Haas & Flower…
This issue is critical for a topic like reading, as throughout elementary school and beyond reading is one of the most important modes of communication in western society. To essentially force the adoption of a relatively complicated skill could have consequences that affect the rest of the child’s education (Gray, n. pag). For those receiving alternative education, independent reading isn’t always necessary for continuing their education. Unfortunately, the way most public and private schools function, it isn’t feasible to have all children learn to read at their own pace.…
Beginning from grade school through middle and high school, we learn how to read and write as we grow. More importantly, we learn how to grab and hold onto many things; the illusions that we aim to achieve, called dreams. The drive to push and better yourself to grasp onto unexpected possibilities, we call opportunities. The belief and confidence that you hold within you, we call faith. Independence as your hope, in all experiences that you’ll be able to make something towards your future.…
The “reading at risk” survey gives a broader view of the reason that readers attend these social events is because they are more engaged in literacy and more informed thus becoming active. If young adults were reading it would diminish the negative effect on society, improve imagination, make them more informed on political and historical topics, and develop creative skills to create higher up…
Learning literacy in specific content areas is a significant facet of education. The importance of literacy came as a shock as I read through this chapter. I’ve always understood that literacy is imperative to our daily lives, but have never considered…

Reading Memoir “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.” Said Dr. Seuss. Ever since I can remember, reading was a little fun for me. Reading is something required throughout life.…
This is going to be a very long and hard life! I wakened from the hard metal bed that I was laying on. I looked up and saw a man gazing into my eyes with terror. He ran out of the room. I got from the hard metal bed with wires coming from my arms.…
Many of my fellow college bound high-schoolers seem lost in this day and age. They pursue a field, usually with the best of intentions. They pick a college with their intended major. Nonetheless, they usually end up switching majors, or even colleges. Why is this?…
Just like learning to walk or ride a bike, learning to read is one of life’s milestones. However, unlike walking and biking, reading skills are not suddenly obtained and then static throughout life. After learning to read initially, an individual’s reading skills, interests, and purposes further develop and change throughout their life. Furthermore, the means by which an individual improves their reading capabilities change over time as well. In the same way, I initially improved my reading ability and changed my interests through the help of my parents, then later my teachers, and finally, in spite of a dark period of little improvement, through my own effort.…
The more students read the more successful academically they will be. We are in a point in society where teenagers and kids are glued to their phones. A kid who is in love with their phone can practically marry it. It is harder to find teens or kids who read for fun. But finding a book that that same kid who is glued to their phone is harder.…
