A major problem in America today is that many people do not read. As an English teacher, I often ask students to read. Many times, they tell me that they don’t like to read, and some even say that they cannot read! It seems like reading is an important skill to have as an adult, so I would like to encourage students to become readers. Kelly Gallagher says that many of the fastest growing professions, including software programming and engineering, have high literacy demands. These professions seem like they would involve more math than reading, but apparently these high-paying careers require literacy as well.
