Why Is It Important To Be Cursive Handwriting?

In 2011 the Common Core State standards adopted by 44 states did not include instruction in cursive; many schools at that time were instead teaching “keyboard proficiency”. In recent years the amount of Ohioans who know cursive has decreased rapidly. With jobs requiring typing skills, becoming more common, teachers generally agree that typing class is more beneficial than a cursive class. In fact, the FairFax Education Association of teachers said that cursive handwriting is a “dying art”. Cursive handwriting is necessary to sign one’s own name on important paperwork such as paychecks,is faster, and is required to be able to read important US documents such as the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. The ability to write in cursive is essential …show more content…
This problem is one that should be addressed by the government because they are the only people who can make it an actual requirement for schools. This is important to the community because cursive handwriting is key to success in many aspects and is beneficial overall. The students may not know that they need it now, but they will be thankful later. This problem is one that could easily be passed by the state government by making it part of public policy. Only 41% of elementary schools in the United States teach cursive. This means that roughly 20 million elementary school students do not know cursive. This problem, while some consider it minor, is actually quite important. This is because without cursive handwriting there are many important and everyday tasks that up and coming adults will not be able to do. This problem began to arise in the late 1930’s and early 1940’s when the ballpoint pen was invented. The new pens dried faster and didn’t smudge, so careful penmanship was less vital. Also, with the invention of the typewriter and the computer, physically writing as a whole has become secondary in most schools. With a cursive education in today’s community, people will continue …show more content…
The bill that I am proposing is that cursive be incorperated as curriculum in all Ohio Elementary school art classes. The advantages of this solution are that students will learn cursive writing will acquire all the skills that come with it, while they can continue to learn the important life skill of typing. This way both cursive and typing are taught and no important time is lost. The only disadvantage to this solution is the fact that a small portion of art class time will be lost. So, the only real loss is a few paintings and such. The level of government responsible for carrying out this policy is the state Government of Ohio. We think that this policy is Constitutional because it resolves an issue of equality. Some schools in Ohio give their students the pleasure of learning cursive, while some others do not. This policy will make it so that all students will have an equal understanding and will be equally prepared for their future. This solution is not only reasonable in the education aspect but in the financial aspect as well. This solution is absolutely free because no new teachers or extra time will be put into place. It will simply be a modification in the curriculum and will make a better use of the time. This solution will have no major impact on the economy or private sector. It will affect the average

Some states are trying to bring cursive back into their school learning program, so that kids know how to use cursive. In my opinion, I think that cursive should still be taught in school today so that kids can have cursive to use if they get tired of using regular print in school. First cursive can help by taking notes faster so students will not fall behind and miss any of the notes need to take in college, Next cursive helps the left and right brain cells communicate better, lastly cursive is a skill that everybody will need to know for later in life. Also cursive makes the left and right brain cells work together so each side of your brain works better together. The brain cells working together can help because it can make think harder about stuff because of the cell communication.…

The reasons why i agree with the first article " I think cursive writting is powerful to the brain " is because of the strong facts in the passages to prove how it is helpful to the people. And how i think cursive is just a really good learning skill we as people may not use cursive writting as much but its still good to know. Cursive is a primitive style of handwriting, but it still should be taught in classes. Just like article "Cursive Is a Powerful Brain Tool" states, "Cursive is a common teaching tool for students with dyslexia. " Cursive gives everyone a new way of thinking. Although when writing cursive you're still using the same letters, it may come more swiftly to someone because not everyone is the same. The passage "Cursive Is a Twenty-First Century Dinosaur" fail to realize that technology may be getting better, but you will need to still need cursive for your signatures at least.…

I think cursive handwriting is not very important for someone to learn. The reason i say that is beacuse people live threw technology on a daily basis. We do not really need to learn the importance of cursive handwritting because, no one will need to really write anymore if everything is done threw technology. As the narrator stated in the passage "technology is moving at such a rapid pace that even keyboards may soon be in danger of extinction". Just knowing something like that most people cant even type as much as they should know how.…

The debate between keeping or removing cursive handwriting is one I have had multiple times with my two children when they have come home complaining about their schoolwork. I firmly believe that it no longer has its uses outside of school in todays society. As author two stated in paragraph 3; "The truth is that cursive writing is virtually gone. Handwriting has taken a backseat to typing as technology dominates the way we communicate. " We currently live in a time where cursive has no place to be used on a daily basis.…

Cursive writting is indeed beneficial to a student's mental development, and therefore; should be thaught in school. Replacing cursive writting with typing and technology will do more harm than good to the student. I typing believe it will minimize their ablity to process and retain information, and is therfore essential to one's learning development. As a student myself, writing my notes by hand helps me process the information as well as remembering it as I write it down.…

Cursive should still be taught because studies show that 50 percent of literacy is cursive and it’s a tool that you can apply and gives you more options. Some examples to show that cursive should still be taught today are, you can write faster, you will need to write a signature, and you are more literate if you can read and write cursive. Although some people think cursive should not be taught is because everybody says that we don’t have any time for it or that we already use technology. Well, yes we have the technology, but if we only know how to use technology, then what are we to do if we find something in cursive, suppose maybe a letter from older generations, if we can’t read it because we only knew how to type. That’s just some facts of why cursive should be taught today.…
