Why Is It Hard For Manolin To Leave Santiago

The Old Man and The Sea by Ernest Hemingway is a book about an old man named Santiago and a young man named Manolin. Santiago and manolin have a father-son relationship and they love fishing together everyday. They spent forty days fishing in the Gulf stream but manolin’s parents said he couldn’t fish with santiago anymore because they haven’t caught any fish and manolin’s parents feel santiago was bad luck. Santiago spent forty-four more days alone trying to catch a fish after manolin left. When Santiago and Manolin went out on a boat trip when manolin was younger santiago taught manolin to fish. They reminisce about the fun times on their boat trips. The two build a strong bond together and thats why its hard for manolin to leave santiago.

    This is what I think Hemingway thought of what it meant to be a man. The way Hemingway depicts Santiago is as an old-fashioned determined man. Hemingway depicts Manolin differently; he listens to his parents and gives up fishing with Santiago because he is unlucky.
