Why Is It All Greek To Me

Improved Essays
“It’s all Greek to me” is an expression that epitomized my math experience junior year both literally and figuratively. Sins, cosines, derivatives. You name it, I was lost. My mom had cautioned against taking honors pre-calculus but I decided to enroll in the class anyway. I would do all of my homework, and would lock myself in my room and study for hours but my grade in the class kept dropping. I couldn’t switch out of the class so I had to buckle down, reach out for help, and try and recover my math grade. I decided the best way to pass the class and learn the material was to ask my uncle, an engineer, to tutor me. I collaborated with my mother, uncle, counselor, and math teacher to make a plan. I went to my uncle's house twice a week to

The article I chose to complete my research on is “Math Anxiety”, by Dr. Ken Shore. I looked through several articles and found this one interesting. This article is not only about math anxiety from a student perspective, but teachers as well. I chose this because I have 11 year old twins and feel this will give me skills that can assist with me helping them with homework in the future. Dr. Shore’s explains that most people who have math anxiety are lacking confidence in their ability to complete the task.…

There’s a Chinese Proverb that says, “Failure is not falling down, but refusing to get back up again.” I really wish I heard that quote when I thought I was a failure, but really was just being lazy. In Carol Dweck’s article “Brainology” a study is conducted on seventh grade students and their mindsets. Their mindsets were measured and studied for two years. Dweck studied the difference between the fixed mindset and the growth mindset students and how they did in school.…

    Greek Discourse Community

Before writing this paper I knew what a discourse community was on the exterior but I never really looked into the definition of a discourse community. After reading the articles and having in class discussions about discourse communities I have a better understanding of what they are and how they impact our daily lives. A discourse community is a group of people who share a set of discourse, understood as basic values and assumptions, and ways of communicating about those goals. For discourse community topic I was considering writing about greek life because I for one am a member of a fraternity and would want to represent the aspect of communal gathering. People that are Greek all have things in common; whether it be just that we are part of a sister/brotherhood or deeper things…

This is my best work for Liberal Arts Mathematics. Though this class may be a review of every math course I have taken in high school thus far, it is rather challenging. I have discovered new information and ideas that I have never learned before. Those new ideas have been very difficult at times, especially in this unit. I set aside an entire week to study for this test, I reviewed every concept, every quiz, every assignment, etc..…

Dear 2017-2018 students, My experience in Señor Lynch’s class was really easy. The work he gave the class was really easy hat I would finish before class even ended. All you need to do to pass his class is turn everything in and stay on top of your work. Señor Lynch’s class is the easiest class if you speak spanish but if you don’t you will struggle on some things because you obviously don’t know spanish but as long as you pay attention and do the work you will pass. My love for science and math didn’t spur from natural talent, but rather from curiosity when I was young. In elementary school my best friend was one of the smartest kids in the school. I, however, was the more creative one and was always in my head. I was almost always lost in my imagination. But my best friend was the exact opposite, he was down to earth and a much more logical person.…

As my day progressed, I could only focus on math. My palms were sweating and shaking as I walked into Mr. Jones’s portable. Nervously, I sat down at a desk directly facing Mr. Jones and for half an hour, I discussed with him about my past math experiences, and the problems that could come with moving up in math. Once we finished discussing, he explained that he wrote some practice problems for me to solve. He handed me a sheet of white paper with a single problem written on it, “graph (x-3)2(x-1)(x+2)”.…

I almost had a heart attack when I received my math test with a big fat red F on top of it. It was the third F I've gotten alone in just math class. I was good in the other subjects such as, physical education, science, and reading. I was going to have to do summer school if I didn’t get my grade up, and I already had my vacation planned out.…

One challenge I've experienced during my pursuit in engineering and my education as a whole has been AP Calculus AB. Considering I've had high grades in previous maths, I assumed that calculus would not be a problem. However, those previous classes could not have given me a sense of what a college level math class would be like, which I learned very quickly. Calculus has been a surprising taste of what college learning is like. I now know that much of the learning is going to be one's own responsibility.…
