Why Is Henry Clay The Great Compromiser

Improved Essays
I am inspired by and aspire to emulate the moral convictions of American statesman, Henry Clay. Henry Clay, known as "the great compromiser" during one of the most bitter, partisan disputes in American culture, is recognized as one of the most distinguished statesmen to have ever lived due to his drive for success, his passion for peace and his willingness to persevere even following failures. Much like Clay, I am intrinsically motivated, a goal setter and driven to succeed. I am concerned for the welfare of others in my community and seek avenues to serve in various capacities. I tutor struggling students weekly and have hosted a blue jean drive and a coat drive for my school and my county. Additionally, I am also very interested in politics

Henry Clay created Clay’s American System in the years following the War of 1812, a plan that called for protective taxes, a national bank and internal improvements. When Clay presented the Internal Improvements Bill, Madison struck down the idea of creating roads and canals, as reflected in Doc H. He argued that Congress was not explicitly given the constitutional right to do so because the power to regulate commerce within the states did not include the right to construct roads and canals, and ultimately did not sign onto the plan (Doc H), depicting his strict interpretation of the…

The Great Compromise reconciled the differences between the Virginia and New Jersey plans, as well as resolving the debate over representation in Congress by creating a bicameral legislature with 1 house with proportional representation, creating 1 house with equal representation for all states, and allowing slave states to count each of their slaves as ⅗ of a white man. To begin, by having proportional representation in one house, the Great Compromise appealed to larger states and the Virginia Plan, which had suggested a bicameral legislature with proportional representation. In addition, the Great Compromise gave all states 2 delegates in the other house. This appealed to the New Jersey Plan, which suggested a legislature with one vote for…

Henry Clay spoke for most people in the West because he and most of the people thought that they should have better roads, canals, and waterway systems. Henry Clay was also a lawyer and that was another reason on why he was a spokesperson for all the people. John C. Calhoun advocated for the south's “interests” but not all of the southerners because not all southerners had different ideas. Daniel Webster opposed the national tariff at first but then came to support it to try to protect some industries that were located in the Northwest. In 1811 the charter for the First National Bank had expired.…
