Why Is Hazing Gone Wrong

Improved Essays
Most people are sent to college with high hopes of starting a successful future. No one thinks that they will never live to finish college. It is expensive to attend college let alone to pay to participate in a sorority. No one expects to pay for annihilated with their life. It is ridiculous the amount of hazing that happens and how extreme it has become. I have heard of the drinking ceremonies as well as the physically invasive traditions new pledge members have to participate in but when someone ends up dying from a severe hazing ritual most know that these rituals have gone too far. From burning people to almost putting fellow students into a alcohol induced coma I don't view hazing as appropriate at all. The article talks about …show more content…
I have a friend and all of her siblings are involved with some sort of Greek Life sorority. There hazing almost had the people involved in the organization expelled from school. As for her other sibling, he had to find his friend deceased in a ditch as a result of a hazing tradition gone wrong. No one should have to ever go through these hardships just because they wanted to be associated with a club. People shouldn’t have to die for tradition. This poor boy who was involved in the Pennsylvania frat incident shouldn’t have had to die because of tradition. The people involved in the frat shouldn’t have to have their lives ruined over tradition ethier. This whole situation is serious. thirty-two hard working students are going to be charged and possibly expelled from their college. Not to mention the five that are going to jail for murder. All of their lives are going to be ruined and they may never have the chance to have the future they wanted. Tradition is not worth jail time or death. Tradition isn't even the name for it. It is considered a sacrifice when someone dies due to a tradition. I agree with the statement made by the parents, this is outrageous that this goes on and that it has gotten so severe. People all over this country have suffered because of these acts and hazing

One of the most recent ethical dilemmas in American sport is the Title IX lawsuit of Hernandez vs. Baylor University. This is without a doubt one of the most prominent Title IX lawsuits to be filed in the 2000s. The lawsuit filed by Hernandez specifically states that she was raped by a player on the Bears’ football team, and that the university police refused to accommodate to her specific needs following the incident, simply because the rape occurred off-campus. Also, the lawsuit claims that the university failed to properly train their employees on the appropriate responses to sexual assault, and other Title IX policies. Perhaps the most outstanding piece of information in this case is that the university was aware that the player involved,…

Or are they keeping a cool distance from the mayhem, knowing full well that it occurs with regularity?” (Flanagan). Many individuals have never taken out the time to research and study some of the hidden secrets about fraternities. However, author Caitlin Flanagan wrote “The Dark Power of Fraternities” published in 2014 in The Atlantic, and she argues all of the hidden flaws within fraternities that are often covered up.…

“It’s not what it looks like”, this is what the majority of members of a sorority or fraternity would respond after being asked about Greek life. Why is that they feel like they have to say that? One word: Marketing. The way sororities and fraternities are portrayed to the public gives off a bad image and reputation about the members and their community. Any person who has not been part of Greek life and does not have any information about this community and its activities they would think sororities and fraternities are just a big house full of college people just having fun, drinking, and sleeping around.…

encouragement” (Sigmanpi.uwa.edu). While the Greek members think that rush week can be a form of development for the students, others believe it’s a type of badgering. This type of subtle hazing “involves activities or attitudes that breach reasonable standards of mutual respect and place new members on the receiving end of ridicule, embarrassment, and humiliation tactics” (umass.edu). The involvement in recruiting involves many body-shaming, name-calling, and performing duties that are out of hand. Self-objectification is a big issue within the groups, the process of rush week allows members that will best fit the club, judging mainly by the way someone looks.…

Growing up, I definitely had a warped view on Greek Life. I presumed being in a sorority would be how the media portrayed it – crazy, dramatic, and dangerous. However, coming to Babson, I saw a different story. I observed a community of strong women supporting each other through encouragement and shared purposes. Every sorority woman I met my first semester of freshman year raved about their experiences and passion for their sisterhood.…

In regards to the Jerry Sandusky and the Penn State Football Scandal every adult who worked at Penn State owed a duty of responsibility to those children who were molested in their facilities, on their campus. When you’re a staff of any kind at an educational institution I believe that the duty of the staff is to look out for the students and to protect them. Students and guests at the campus are supposed to be safe, not preyed upon or abused. Unfortunately for Penn State, a very well-known school, the actions of one speak for the whole institution. I don’t necessarily believe that everyone is responsible for another person’s actions, because sometimes secrets are kept really well and no one truly knows what’s going on.…

In recent studies, it has been projected that around 70% of college students violate their university’s honor code. Some may find these statistics to be surprising and alarming, but I am not one of those people. I think that these statistics can eye opening to many people, those people who have lacked exposure to a very competitive environment, however as someone who was exposed and participated in that competitive environment, I have experienced violations of the honor code many times over. As a student who grew up in the Research Triangle area in North Carolina, I was exposed to some of the greatest high schools and colleges not only in the country, but in the world.…

Greek life on campus is an aspect of upper education that is publicized often, many proclaiming the social and educational benefits of living with your peers, but has a significant amount of negative stigma attached to it. Although the tales told of fraternities and sororities are sometimes exaggerated, there are many more cases where Greek life organizations have garnered copious amounts of attention for controversial behavior. In Fraternity and Sorority Alcohol Use: Does Race Matter?, Michael Capece, David Schantz, and Rebecca Wakeman expound upon one of these behaviors, specifically detailing the general perception of alcohol consumption within fraternities and sororities and across two different races, from the point of view of research.…
