Hammurabi’s punishments did not fit his punishments. First, it says in law 129 that “if a married lady is caught ( in adultery) with another man, they shall bind them and cast them into water” people should be given a second chance for their mistake. often people realize what they did wrong when they get caught. In this case they're just going to be thrown in water to drown. they won’t be able to learn from their mistakes and become a better person. Second, in law 195 it says “if a son has struck his father, his hands shall be cut off” the son should be taught that it’s wrong to attack your father. Cutting the son’s hand won’t solve anything. Lastly, in law 48 it says “if a man has borrowed money to plant his fields and a storm has flooded his field or carried the crops away.. in that year he does not have to pay his creditor. This shows that slaves didn’t mean as much as free people. The color of your skin shouldn’t determine the punishment you’re going to get. Second, every law starts off as “if a man” hammurabi is ignoring one gender. Women can commit the same crimes as men so why do his laws refer to men only? third, they value a free’s baby’s life more than a slave’s. If a slave's baby gets killed then the man only has to pay 2 shekels of silver but, if a free baby’s dies then it’s 10 shekels of silver. One life is not more important than another. The babies aren’t born yet and they're already getting treated
