Why Is Hamlet Gone Wrong

Hamlet remains one of the most critically acclaimed piece of literature for its complex and interesting story. After over 400 years people still argue what the best route Hamlet could have gone. Some argue he had no choice on his actions because he was bounded by Elizabethan code, while others argue he should have thrown away his morals for his best interest. Hamlet succeeded in avenging his father’s death, but at what cost? I believe Hamlet acted poorly and did not think his plan thoroughly which ultimately led to his impending doom. Because of Hamlets unwillingness to kill Claudius while he is praying, Hamlet loses his perfect opportunity to leave no traces. Hamlet stabbed the curtain not thinking that he his mother would witness him murdering what he thought was Claudius. If it was Claudius, Gertrude would have no choice but to expose Hamlet, even though he is her son. Hamlet sealed his fate when he killed Polonius and is what caused later events in the story. The quarrel with Laertes was created when he claimed vengeance on his father’s murderer. This would have never led to duel where Hamlet was stabbed with the poison; however, the duel is when Hamlet finally got his revenge. The death of Polonius also partially drove Ophelia insane and causing her commit suicide. He immediately thought of the idea after he talked to his father’s ghost without thinking of the repercussions it could have "I perchance hereafter shall think meet / To put an antic disposition on" (67). The more attention faced towards Hamlet the harder it would be for him commit the murder. For example, after Claudius and Gertrude noticed Hamlet’s odd behavior they sent Guildenstern and Rosencrantz to watch after him. Claudius also sent Polonius to eavesdrop on Hamlet because he knew that Hamlet figured out that he was the murderer. It was not wise for Hamlet to create the play recreating the murder because it allowed Claudius to get one step ahead of him. Now that Claudius knew he could prevent Hamlet from whatever plan he created which was the problem Hamlet did not have a for sure plan to kill Claudius. Hamlet could have took his time to formulate a plan instead of acting quickly and un-decisively. However, if Hamlet was to never to create to the play he would have never known if Claudius was true
