Personal Narrative: I Am Haiti

It is often interesting viewing your world and reality through the eyes of other people, listening as they decipher and make assumptions, none all that accurate, about the facts, while you 're left to live those facts. Americans have a lot of opinions about Haiti and about as many questions too. As soon as people know that I’m Haitian, I get flooded with questions that I highly doubt they want the answers to: “Why is Haiti so poor?” “Do you do voodoo?” “Where does all the relief money go?” “Why are the politicians so corrupt?” So never mind the fact that Haiti was the first independent black country, or that in order for France to recognize it as a country, Haiti had to agree to compensate slaveholders for their “loses” as a result of the uprising, which amounted to …show more content…
I am under no false notion that I’m the smartest, nor one of those people that seems like life was made for them, yet I never take the struggles that I encounter as status-quot. Life is unfair, yes, but that doesn’t mean that there isn’t better and that the situations and hardships in front of me is all that I will ever look up to. This mindset has proven me to strive for the best in every way that I could possible can. It 's more than just about working towards my success, it 's my peoples success too. The knowledge that I have acquired and hope to continue achieving will not only benefit me and the society that I now live in, but also for the better of my country. Oh if you see and experience the resilience of this people, their imaginable strength and perseverance despite the many obstacles in their future, only then will you truly know the potential that lies within them. And hope through my work in the future to be the one to ignite the flame that unlocks that potential, or at least live long enough to see what my parents and their parents have always know about this lost treasure of an island, and have the world recognize
