In “The Rise of the New Group Think,” Susan Cain argues that solitude has more benefits to the work space, than working in a group. In our culture, the work environment, as well as schools use the power of collaboration, more than solitude. Cain states the pros of solitude, while using a few pros and cons of working with others. This can lead to improved morale decisions as employees gain more authority and ownership over the projects they are working on. The extra responsibility can lead to a more rewarding work environment and lower turnover. Working in a team also gives employees a greater sense of belonging and of recognition, which helps them take more pride in their work, and their company. In high school, we were constantly being told that we could not work in groups because we would get too loud. In university group work was encouraged so that our professors wouldn't have to do as much marking. During my observations at my CSL there was a lot of group work. Comparing when the students were working on group work to their individual work, the results were polar opposites. The tasks for students was to write down what they knew about 5 sided figures.…

As a collaborator, my strengths were that I made sure that everything got done on time and that it was done right. My weaknesses were that I didn’t really talk to my group as much as I should have and I kind of didn’t put responsibility on anyone but myself. Group work requires talking to others, otherwise you’ll just pull all of the weight and the other group members will get a free ride. Honestly, I feel comfortable controlling the whole process of group work and have people just follow what I say so I know that things are getting done right. This is probably not good, but I don’t feel like I can trust groups because a lot of the time people don’t do what they’re supposed to.…

It started in 1972 with Irving L. Janis observing a small group of individuals performing problem solving tasks. He noticed that these individuals maintain a focused attitude in never going outside of the group and remained isolated from being exposed to other options. Groups tend to work because people bring different ideas, collective inputs and remain close together. This can cause people to get a relief form the problem that the group is confronted by suppressing person doubts, quieting dissenters and following the leader’s opinion without consulting their own judgement on the matter at hand. Groups can be advantageous when individuals participate in activities where they can get feedback, acquiring new skills, and recognizing their strengths and weaknesses.…

Whether you are a part of a social group or on a group project for school or work everyone has the want and need to be included, when group members don’t feel like they have fully been accepted in to the group they can become withdrawn and anti-social which would lead them to not be a contributing part of the team. Having a diverse group of people on a team can help a team more effectively and efficiently reach their common goal. If everyone on the team had the exact same life experiences, was the same age and the same culture they more than likely would have the same general way to approach the group’s common goal. Having diversity on the team can help generate more ideas because everyone’s life experiences and cultural differences have helped form the way they think and the way that they solve problems. Roles, needs and diversity affect a group’s teamwork immensely because if members aren’t performing their specific goal and only focusing on a self-centered role the groups work will either multiply for the other members of the group or the group’s common goal might not be met.…

Reflection Paper II Throughout my college experience here in the Carroll School of Management, group work and the ability to work well with others has been emphasized greatly. By helping, supporting and motivating each other it made the project easier to solve and it helped us in achieving our work in the most effective time and ways. Here are some points I loved about the experience, firstly being a part of a group helped in developing my skills and we were able to achieve more work than in working individually. Apparently, the interactive nature of a knowledgebased society and a knowledge-based economy mandates the ability to collaborate. “Those who have successfully created cultures of innovation and creativity suggest that one key is to… embrace participation, collaboration, networking…” Collaboration and teamwork is such a key element to many aspects of life - it appears everywhere, and this skill comes in handy later in life in many situations, maybe even tomorrow. It took me a slight bit of willingness to give collaboration and teamwork a shot and understand what is behind it, it’s not just wanted or unwanted socialization, like I thought before, it might be the key to building a business empire, for all I can know. In the modern age, when a lot of the things are already invented, it’s hard to come up with something new on your own. It’s the innovation that rarely takes place in just one head.…
