Why Is Group Project Useful

Improved Essays
I was standing In front of the class not knowing what to do or say. Our class was assigned a group project and of course I was stuck with the “weird” kids. Unfortunately I was sick for three days and came back when the project was due. My group quickly briefed me on what I had so say, but I totally forgot when I was in front of the class. Thankfully my group helped me through it and had my back. At the end of the presentation I was relieved and grateful to the people in my group. Group projects are useful because, you get to know others, share ideas, and there are more people to help.

One reason is that you can meet lots of new people. Group projects are also a social activity where you have to interact with others. I hear my teachers often say “learning to work with others is a lifelong skill.” I once made a close friend with someone I wouldn’t have talked to if it weren’t for us being grouped together. We have now been friends for over 2 years and tell eachother everything. Making friends is definitely a perk to working in groups.

When you have other people to talk with it can to develop your ideas and understanding of the subjects. My classmates often argue with each other, they say things like “you’re wrong” or “no, Im not”. After the teacher quiets down the class we discuss what we think and why we think that way. In class we were on the topic of total equality. At the beginning I was totally for it, but after listening to my groups opinions I changed my mind. Understanding everyone's thoughts help to develop your

I was very happy when we came together as a group because I’ve never been in a group with any of these people before and I was excited to work with them. One of the strengths from our group’s presentation was that we all included lots of helpful information on PTSD on our respective slides, which will hopefully teach the class something about the mental illness. Another strength of our presentation was how it looked. Kristina and I spent lots of time going over the aesthetic of the entire presentation to make sure every slide matched (ex: using the same font and colours).…

In high school, we were constantly being told that we could not work in groups because we would get too loud. In university group work was encouraged so that our professors wouldn't have to do as much marking. During my observations at my CSL there was a lot of group work. Comparing when the students were working on group work to their individual work, the results were polar opposites. The tasks for students was to write down what they knew about 5 sided figures.…

For me the activity of working as a group especially with other individuals who I have not worked with or talked to before was a good learning experience that had both positive and negative outcomes using Driscoll’s model of reflection as a frame work to elaborate on how I interpreted what happened, what impact the situation had on me and what I will do in the future if presented with a similar situation (Driscoll and Teh, 2001). We were required to do a 10 minute presentation for a health promotion project that we developed. I decided to work with other individuals who I didn’t know and have not worked with before as I believed I would be more productive and respectful if I worked with people I didn’t know very well. For the first tutorial…

My experience has been interesting, positive, and at the same time rewarding. My very first experience with working in group was couple of years ago during a final year project, in my country of birth. The project was in community medicine, and involved repeated trip to a rural community by my group to access their health status, and needs. We had many challenges, but overcame them all as a group. I learnt the act of collaboration, critical thinking, problem solving, decision making by consensus building, and most importantly; comradeship.…

During and after the group project I got a better understanding of NAVAL and a better understanding of my group. For example, Lexi is the leader of the group and Camille is the worker bee meaning that she is the one to go to for the information about the presentation. There were many high points in the group such as when we completed are power point early and when we researched the information. I had a blast working with them. A low point was when the video couldn’t load and we had to start from scratch again.…

As a collaborator, my strengths were that I made sure that everything got done on time and that it was done right. My weaknesses were that I didn’t really talk to my group as much as I should have and I kind of didn’t put responsibility on anyone but myself. Group work requires talking to others, otherwise you’ll just pull all of the weight and the other group members will get a free ride. Honestly, I feel comfortable controlling the whole process of group work and have people just follow what I say so I know that things are getting done right. This is probably not good, but I don’t feel like I can trust groups because a lot of the time people don’t do what they’re supposed to.…

According to Tweed, A, in “ Designing Effective Science Instruction”, Science teachers should be more effective when planning and implementing science content by focusing on some important strategies in order to provide students with meaningful opportunities and refine their science understandings in authentic contexts. One of these important strategies is an engaging student in scientific inquiry. Many science educators think that inquiry-based instruction leads to better science understandings and practices of concepts and develop the logic, thinking, and skills. As a result, they should use instructional techniques to engage students in science inquiry by asking questions that can be classified in many ways such as what, where, how, and…

Teaching Strategies Catalogue “Jigsaw” Jigsaw is a teaching strategy that allows for a teacher to break up learning material, so students must reply on each other to learn the required information. For example, you present a lengthy article to your class and then put students into groups where they are assigned different sections. Once assigned their section, they are regrouped with students that share the same section. In their “like groups” they discuss and share their ideas about their section. After they have discussed and shared their section, they return to their original groups, where they piece together the article as a whole.…

Teaching controversial issues in the classroom through discussion is the most beneficial method for students to learn about these matters because it teaches them how to be open-minded, think critically about their own beliefs, and forces them to master their public speaking and interpersonal skills. The benefits of using discussions in classrooms to teach contentious topics are endless but the three previously mentioned have proven to be the most valuable by students, teachers, and parents everywhere. Class discussions force students to listen, embrace, and be respectful of opinions and beliefs that are divergent to their own. As mentioned by David Bridges (1979), an author who has formerly analyzed the notion of discussion, the sharing of…

Throughout the year, as a class we have been given many different challenges in either the form of an essay, speech, or group presentation. The final assignment given to us was a group project presentation. From growing up in an age filled with technology, I have come to love projects that revolve around making some form of a PowerPoint presentation. This PowerPoint though, was both difficult and interesting for the reasons of being assigned group members not of my own choosing, learning to listen to others ideas which can help me to learn something new, and using former knowledge while working together to create a clean, in depth, and well prepared presentation. With working in groups of students whom I have known since I was young but…

According to Hess (2004), “the benefits that occur from high-quality discussion not only democratize the classroom but also help students themselves play with ideas and develop the skills to critically think” Classrooms are social settings whereby teaching and learning come about through social interaction among students. The interactions and relationships among students, as they work side by side, constitute the group processes of the classroom. Group interactions are particularly significant in twenty-first century schools. Group projects and cooperative teamwork are the foundations of effective teaching, creative curriculum, and positive classroom climate. These structured group settings afford students an opportunity for social dialogue that can stimulate cognitive growth and development.…
