Grain Crops in Greek Art
In the ancient world, agriculture was a major part of Greek civilization. Specifically wheat and barley were staple crops in many cultures and were used for many purposes. Grain crops have been a focus for agricultural art in different cultures. They are crops that can be easily cultivated and grown for the consumption of the people. Over the years, art has been able to tell us about the past and about the civilizations from which the pieces originated. At this time the Battle of Marathon was happening, so many Greeks had to fight against the Persians. It is one of the earliest recorded battles. Their victory over the Persian invaders gave the Greek city states confidence in their ability to defend themselves and believe in their continued existence. The battle is therefore considered a defining moment in the development of European culture ("Battle of Marathon"). Since the war was going on food must have been in very high demand. It makes sense that grains would be most popular at that time because it was the easiest food to cultivate and be used to feed the Greek army in battle. This piece fits into the scope of the class because not only was it made for holding grain crops, but it also introduced me to the different ways it could be used. In many cultures, the people or commoners would bring offerings to their gods or their kings. With the new production of wheat and other grains this art piece would have played an important role in showing the gods or kings how successful they were. The sole purpose of this art piece was to please the gods through food offerings. We learned in class that the people of Greece and other cultures always wanted to make their gods happy so nothing bad would happen to them (Lash). Therefore, using techniques such as offerings would have pleased them. Grain crops can be made into flour, and these can be made into many other foods, which is why they are so popular. The crops are valuable because of what they can become (mostly anything). They serve a never-ending purpose in the lives of many farmers and consumers, but also artists that know the importance of these
