Why Is George Necessary In Of Mice And Men

Improved Essays
A wise man once said “ At some point, you have to realize that some people can stay in your heart, but not in your life”. That quote goes with the ending when George shot Lennie. The book we read, was Of Mice and Men By: John Steinbeck. In the book everyone was lonely and alone at some point. Do you think what George did was necessary? This book was about a large man named Lennie, who was considered mentally retarded and a small man named George who looked after Lennie to keep him from trouble. They came from a town called weed because Lennie did a bad thing and was on the run and heading to their new jobs on a ranch. They had big dreams and tried to work hard to accomplish them. They wanted to start their own ranch and Lennie wanted to tend him some rabbits. When George and Lennie get to the ranch they learn they have a long road ahead of them. I feel Lennie was a good man and somewhat a danger to our society And yes Gorges actions were necessary. …show more content…
Moreover would of got worse as he aged. Yes, Lennie did not mean to do all the things he did like back in weed and killing the puppy he got. He was scared and George did what he had to do. In my opinion, it was better for George to kill Lennie then anyone else. Lennie was a danger to the world. If George would of let Lennie go someone else would have killed him. For example, Curly could’ve killed Lennie because Lennie killed Curley’s wife. Lennie was a large man that could kill anything if he wanted to. He crushed Curley's hand because Curley started hitting him and George told him to fight back. It’s sad that Lennie does not realize how big of a threat he is to people and how he never means no harm to

George did the right thing at the end of the book because Lennie was a threat to everyone around him and if George did not kill him sooner, he would have killed more people later on. With Lennie’s strength and size, he overpowered anybody that he faced and because of the mental state that he was in, he could not control his power remarkably well and that led to many tragic outcomes. For example, “And then she was still, for Lennie had broken her neck,” (91). Since Lennie cannot control his power, it causes him to do things that he never intended of doing. What was only supposed to be the stroking of Curley’s wife’s hair, lead to her death only a few moments later.…

Although George loved Lennie, he had to kill him because the mob wanted to get him lynched, the police would have put him in jail, and if George let Lennie run off he would starve that is why i think George did the right thing. Since Curley planned on torturing Lennie, George saved Lennie from suffering. Curley stated that ¨i am gonna get him... i will shoot him in the gut¨(Steinbeck 92). George prevented Lennie from suffering an agonizing and slow death.next, Curley sent whit into town to get a cop to arrest Lennie.…

Many people have wondered should George have shot Lennie? While I am upset that he shot Lennie, after thinking for awhile I think that he made the right decision. One reason that I think this is because if they tried to run away together they would have eventually been caught. Partly due to the fact that they are dealing with a murder more people will be looking for them and they didn’t get a very big head start. If they did escape though they would be looking over their shoulder and lived a unhappy fearful life.…

I, personally, don’t think George was justified in killing Lennie, but some of the evidence from the text proves otherwise. Most people saw Lennie as a child and not a grown man, which is understandable, and that may be one reason why George wanted to get rid of him. Many times he was called a child or people would say he acted like one. For example, when Lennie brought the puppy in the bunkhouse and George made him take it back, Slim said, “He’s jes’ like a kid, ain’t he.” Lennie was constantly in trouble which made it hard for George to keep a job for long.…

Just because Lennie didn’t know what he was doing, he still did something bad that led them to have to skip town. Another reason is Lennie would’ve been tortured anyway. Curley said he was going to hunt him down because he killed Curley’s wife. “He looked down at her, and carefully he removed his hand from over her mouth” (Steinbeck 23). He killed Curley’s wife and George knew that Curley wasn’t going to handle it very well and knew he was going to torture him or something.…

After Lennie killed Curley's wife, the other guys had their mind set on killing Lennie for what he had done, but George decided he should do it himself so it wouldn't hurt him as bad as knowing that he let other people do barely know Lennie, do it. Even though George knew he was better off without Lennie in his life he's even told Lennie “I could be living so good without you getting me in trouble and outta a job” (Steinbeck). Honestly George knows he’d be better off in his life without Lennie, but he doesn't want to leave Lennie because he knows he would be alone and put in place for the mentally impaired people. George did the right thing by killing Lennie because, locking Lennie up wouldn’t have been better, he put Lennie in a better place, and Curley would have killed Lennie violently. Other people claim that George should not have killed Lennie because they were friends and killing Lennie would make their friendship pointless. If George wouldn’t have killed Lennie he wouldn’t get to stay at the Ranch he would have had to leave since he was tied to Lennie. Also, if George wouldn’t have killed Lennie, they could have gone off somewhere and started over trying to achieve their goal of the…

Overall George made a good decision when he decides to take Lennie's life. It was extremely hard for him to do since he really did love him. This decision saved LEnnie a lot of pain and fear because Curley would not have been sympathetic at all. Also Lennie kind of had it coming to him. I think that there was no time to go hide and escape so Lennie could have suffered. Have you ever seen those commercials about how owners and dog pounds have to put down animals? Imagine it like this Lennie is an animal, he’s getting sick and ill and too old there wasn’t a reason to let him suffer. What if George did tell him to leave, go find a cave and disappear? How would you feel if your best friend you’d known for several years said that to you and didn’t want anything to do with you?…
