Not Mary was she his caring wife, but she also stood by George through any problem they would face, as a result George was able to succeed. Mary was able to provide the responsibility needed to care for four children alone while George was away working financially support the family. An example of this is when Mary and George are off to leave for their honeymoon, they had $2,000 with them and saw a ruckus near the bank and loan office. Both went in to find out someone asked for a loan of all their money. Everyone was scurrying around demanding their money understanding they might not receive it for much more time. Mary then pulls out the $2,000 to give to the people, giving them all they would want or need that was initially in their bank account. In addition, during George’s affair after discovering Billy had misplaced $8,000 which was about to put him in jail, Mary realizes this is a major problem and gathers all of their friends and family to raise the money Billy had misplaced.
