Creative Writing: Garp In The World

It’s always hard to tell how old manga/anime characters are, but I’m betting he joined the Marines in his late teens or early twenties. And seeing as how Garp is probably in his mid seventies, that means Garp has been a Marine for about fifty years. And even when he first adopted Ace, he’d been a Marine for around 30 years. We all know the Marines and the World Government are full of corruption, but they’re still the greatest force for stability in the world. How many comrades and friends of Garp do you think have been killed in his lifetime? How many innocent people do you think Garp’s seen murdered by criminals? How burned and smouldering towns do you think Garp’s had to walk through after pirates had finished their business there? The world …show more content…
We don’t know what their history was, but somehow Dragon went and became the worst criminal in the entire world. Can you imagine how much distress and turmoil Garp had to go through as he watched his own son take the path in life he chose? And if Dragon had ever been arrested and put on the execution platform like Ace was, Garp probably would have had to suffer through the same struggle and same heart crushing emotions. But how come you’re not saying that Garp should have quit the Marines and chosen family because of Dragon, and instead focusing on Luffy and Ace? It’s because we don’t know Dragon and don’t love him like with do with them, so it doesn’t bother us the same …show more content…
Coby’s a Marine who has promised to catch Luffy. And let’s say he does catch Luffy—what happens next? Easy: he either gets tortured in Impel Down the rest of his life, or gets executed. So how come nobody is mad at Coby over this? It’s because Coby’s young, and we like him, and Luffy’s cool with it. Luffy understands that Coby has his own dreams, his own goals, and his own mission and purposes in life, and that just because people have conflicting beliefs and missions doesn’t mean that one has to be right and one has to be wrong. We demonize Garp for not abandoning his career because of the choices Luffy and Ace made, but we cheer for Coby for actively pursuing his goals, which actively include arresting

Dark clouds had moved in the night before and had stayed overnight providing a refreshing sprinkle of rain every now and then. He looked out over the vast plain of unsettled water and saw one individual white cap rise up among the rest only to be pushed back down. Due to the lack of sunlight the frigid water appeared black and lifeless but he knew that below it was a complex community of different species. This is ironic in that in spite of all his resolves, in spite of all the work he did and the expectation that he would succeed, Jimmy Gatz died in the pursuit of his belief, died for trying to change something in the world. Any reader has the expectation that because Jay Gatsby “was bound to get ahead” and he had such a large number of resolves, that of course he would succeed.…
