L8r, G8r Banned or Not?

The name of the book I have chosen is “L8r, G8r” by Lauren Myracle. The book is about three girls named Zoe, Maddie, and Angela. They are high school seniors dealing with the pressure of graduating high school together, and going their separate ways. A large number of people think this books should be banned due to religious reasons and adult content, along with bad behavior by the teenagers. My personal opinion is that this book should be banned for many reasons that I will list. One reason I think this book should be banned is it has a lot of profanity by the teenagers. This is very bad for young children to read in books. It is bad because sometimes after they read these words they will mimic them and start to

This sentiment is only partially correct, there is a good reason why it is labeled under the young adult genre of children’s’ books. There are some very mature themes touching on serious issues that may be potentially too strong for a young mind to handle appropriately. While no book should be omitted from a library, a certain amount of caution would be a prudent and wise decision. The topics covered in the story are relevant and need to light shed upon them continually, so as not to forget or overlook the advances that society still needs to make. However, some topics are simply to mature for young children.…

Books are challenged and banned for many reasons. One book that has been challenged many times is This One Summer by Mariko Tamaki and Jillian Tamaki. Although it does have some mature themes, it should not be banned due to the fact that many adolescents go through, or have gone through, similar things in their lives and it can help them see that other people understand what they are going through. Also it talks about the taboo topics we don’t talk about in society, or which could be important to their lives.…

Often times parents will challenge a book for its language and the violence present in the book, because they want to keep their child innocent and protected from the wrongs of the world. While it is a understandable concern, it is ridiculous considering what the average high schooler sees and hears in the halls of their school on a daily basis. Parents like this wanted to ban A…

For many, that is just the reason to file a complaint, lodge a local campaign or sponsor a very public book burning. To some people banning makes sense. In contrast, others find it unfair. Katelyn Hallman does an excellent job of summing up a response at theoddysseyonline.com. She writes, “just because you don’t want your child reading about certain topics doesn’t mean you should limit every child’s opportunity to read about them if their parents think it’s fit for them”.…

Book banning and censoring is something that happens in this country to stop children from being exposed to topics that are sometimes deemed too explicit to be suitable for children. Harper Lee’s novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, keeps getting banned from the curriculum of a Mississippi middle school. This is happening for the books inclusion of rape and derogatory language, particularly the overuse of the n-word. Many also do not like how some of the characters in the novel are portrayed, and do not realize how this portrayal is very accurate to the time period. Because of the truthfulness of the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, along with every other book, should not be banned or censored because books reflect and bring awareness to real life problems, the practice of banning books violates the First Amendment, and reasons for book banning are often easily contradicted.…

    Banning Of Twilight

On the issue of the Twilight Saga by Stephenie Meyer being challenged, I believe that this book should not be banned because there is not adequate evidence to remove this book from the shelves of school libraries around the United States. For the age group that this book was meant for, there are no issues that would have a strong, negative influence on the readers. Although there are some topics and scenes that could be labeled as inappropriate or insulting, the book in whole is not inappropriate. Personally, I found this an outstanding book full of romance, suspense, and mythical excitement.…

According to the American Library Association 11,300 books have been challenged since 1982. The school board has banned many books for no reason. The novel The House on Mango Street is an example of one of these many banned books. The TUSD board banned this book because it “promotes the overthrow of the US government, promotes resentment to a race or class of people, and is designed primarily for one ethnic group.” Clearly you can tell that the school board banned this book without doing their research, because it never talked about the overthrow of the government.…

Fortunately, for every group pushing for bans on literature, there are organizations that fight for this freedom. One such organization is the American Civil Liberties Union. In the year 2000, when discussing the topic of book banning, the organization stated that, “Permitting restraints on literature sets the stage for attacks on all expression that is artistically or politically controversial or that portrays unpleasant realities of life” (American Civil Liberties Union). Although some books may contain graphic violence or sexual content, and therefore of course should be kept out of the hands of children, I’d like to think that these widespread en masse bans of such literature are a poor way to go about it. It’s not as if middle or high school students are incapable of understanding and comprehending dark or more adult subject matter.…
