Freedom of Assembly Freedom of assembly, sometimes used interchangeably with the freedom of association, is the individual right or ability of people to come together and collectively express, promote, pursue, and defend their ideas. The right to freedom of association is recognized as a human right, a political right and a civil liberty. This right is granted to American citizens and residents by the first amendment of the United States Constitution, which states that “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.” This amendment, written by James Madison and effective from December 15th 1791 to the present, is part of the first ten amendments of the United States Constitution, which are also known as the Bill of Rights. In the article Freedom of Assembly written by Lincoln University students, it is stated that “people are entitled to assemble and to speak and be heard... this basic freedom ensures that the spirit of the First Amendment survives and thrives even when the majority of citizens would rather suppress expression it finds offensive.” Freedom of assembly is not only crucial to ensure personal freedom, but is also essential in enabling democracy to work and public participation in
