Why Is Forever Should Be Banned

This book has sold over 3.5 million copies and forty years after it was first published, it is still causing controversy. Forever is about a teenage girl, katherine, who falls in love with a boy named Michael and they promise to be with each other forever. This book should be banned because it does not promote abstinence and has detailed sexual content.
Forever is mainly challenged for its sexual content. Multiple schools and public libraries have banned and challenged this book. The sex scenes in this book are very descriptive and somewhat unnecessary to tell the story. “Soon Michael moaned and I felt him come- a pulsating wet feeling, a throbbing, like the books-then wetness.” (78) This is one of the many descriptive sex scenes in the book. It is nonessential to tell the story. Teens should not be exposed to this kind of content at such a early age.
Tons of four letter words are used in this book, for example, when Jamie says “Were you fucking?” Swearing is not that bad. All teenagers swear. It’s just a matter of who they swear in front of. Swearing can really emphasize the intensity of the situation. No book should be banned just for swearing. Another reason Forever is challenged is because a character attempts suicide. “ On Thursday morning, Michael's birthday, Artie hung himself from the shower curtain in his bathroom.” (161) Suicide is a

I think this book should be banned just in high schools because the sex scenes are extremely descriptive and disgusting. It also does not promote abstinence. Do you really want to give the message to high schoolers that it's okay to have sex before marriage when it can severely damage someone emotionally and physically. The book may be better off in a public library where so many teenagers have access to the book, as where teens would have to go out of there way to read the book. Does this book promote your

Parent may think that the book is too mature for young teens. Because of its mentions of sexual assault, violence, and adultery, some parents would prefer their children not be exposed to those circumstances. The story could be seen as a bad influence on teens as some of the advice Walls’ mother gave her can be taken in the wrong light. For example, when Walls conveyed to her mother that Uncle Stanley had been touching her inappropriately and in respond her mother tells Walls to calm down and says sexual assault is a “crime of perception.” In other words, Walls’ mother tells her if she doesn’t think she’s hurt, then she isn’t hurt.…

During this instance in 1997, the book was put into the advanced reading list which made it be censored, instead of banned. Even though these are the reasons that were said, there are plenty more that make the book harmful. The fact that the main character is continuously in abusive relationships where she is “happy” until something “bad” happens. For example, at one point she was in an mentally abusive relationship and when she was threatened to be killed, she realized she had to leave because it wasn’t “healthy”. This shows that she was okay with being mentally brought down until she was threatened.…

In the novel Shade’s Children by Garth Nix, a strong representation of friendship is demonstrated. In the book, a small boy named Gold-Eye has run away from his base camp once he had turned fifteen, which was just around the time of the change. The reason he was nicknamed Gold-Eye was because the change has placed an effect on his eyes, making them into a gold color. While his eyes are gold, they also have a special power. What he refers to as the “soon to be now”, meaning he can see into the future.…

Often times parents will challenge a book for its language and the violence present in the book, because they want to keep their child innocent and protected from the wrongs of the world. While it is a understandable concern, it is ridiculous considering what the average high schooler sees and hears in the halls of their school on a daily basis. Parents like this wanted to ban A…

The book “Bone: Out From Boneville” by Jeff Smith (Smith) was banned along with the rest of his Bone series for sexual tension, the use of tobacco and alcohol, frightening images, violence, and racism. I don’t think that this book should be banned simply because these accusations are either not focused on during the book, or completely false. (Smith) The plot includes three cousins of an imaginary specie called a Bone. They are running through a desert after being chased off by an angry mob when they get split up due to a huge crowd of locust.…

Book banning and censoring is something that happens in this country to stop children from being exposed to topics that are sometimes deemed too explicit to be suitable for children. Harper Lee’s novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, keeps getting banned from the curriculum of a Mississippi middle school. This is happening for the books inclusion of rape and derogatory language, particularly the overuse of the n-word. Many also do not like how some of the characters in the novel are portrayed, and do not realize how this portrayal is very accurate to the time period. Because of the truthfulness of the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, along with every other book, should not be banned or censored because books reflect and bring awareness to real life problems, the practice of banning books violates the First Amendment, and reasons for book banning are often easily contradicted.…

Would you want your child reading a book that that might influence them to do something wrong? Many books in school get censored all the time. When a book gets banned or censored it would not be able to be read by students or be in the curriculum. Also, the book can not be distributed by teachers in the school. After reading Killing Mr. Griffin by Lois Duncan, we believe that it should be censored because it involves bad role models and a lot of violence.…

Fortunately, for every group pushing for bans on literature, there are organizations that fight for this freedom. One such organization is the American Civil Liberties Union. In the year 2000, when discussing the topic of book banning, the organization stated that, “Permitting restraints on literature sets the stage for attacks on all expression that is artistically or politically controversial or that portrays unpleasant realities of life” (American Civil Liberties Union). Although some books may contain graphic violence or sexual content, and therefore of course should be kept out of the hands of children, I’d like to think that these widespread en masse bans of such literature are a poor way to go about it. It’s not as if middle or high school students are incapable of understanding and comprehending dark or more adult subject matter.…

Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher, is about thirteen reasons why a teenage girl takes her own life. Thirteen Reasons Why was the third most challenged book in 2012 according to the American Library Association, "A challenge is defined as a formal, written complaint, filed with a library or school requesting that materials be removed because of content or appropriateness" (Top Ten Frequently Challenged Books Lists of this the 21st Century). Thirteen Reasons Why should not be banned. The American Library Association (ALA) has some very good points on why this book should be banned, but I personally believe you can learn from the mistakes that the characters make in the book. " Each year, the ALA's Office for Intellectual Freedom compiles a list of the top ten most frequently challenged books in order to inform the public about censorship in libraries and schools" (Top Ten Frequently Challenged Books Lists of the 21st Century).…
