The opportunities in the world today are endless thanks to advancements in technology, we can communicate with people on the other side of the world. Of course, if you’re dealing with someone across the globe, you will need to be able to communicate with them effectively. To do business with a partner in Russia you would need to know not only the customs and cultures, but to some degree, the language as well. International communication is the cornerstone for expanding your business, “90 percent of executives said their companies’ profit, revenue, and market share would all improve if their international communication skills could be improved” (3). A couple things someone can do to improve themselves is by studying other cultures, studying languages, and respecting preferences for communication style. The last point can be drawn back to the previous paragraph where we discussed high and low context cultures, “U.S. workers prefer an open and direct communication style…. However, professionals from high-context cultures such as Japan or China ten to be less Direct” (8). When communicating with someone, it is especially important to speak and listen carefully whether they are from another country or not; to ensure successful conversations between people who don’t speak the same language accommodations need to be made (9). If communication is impossible still, then using a translator is still better than nothing else. Translators can be expensive, but their services can be invaluable especially when dealing with other cultures (10).
