Why Is Curley's Wife Important In Of Mice And Men

The character that stands out the most to me in the play of Of Mice and Men is Curley’s Wife. Her name is never mentioned throughout the entire play, demonstrating the objectification in women as to other she may be seen only as the possession of Curley’s. The other reason could also be the insignificant role/status she has. The first time she is mentioned we learn that she is newly married to Curley. He is known for his possessiveness over her, and is full of jealousy as he suspects his precious wife may be cheating on him. Ever since their wedding his bad temper kept increasing. They refer to her as a “tart” and “tramp” the only thing she wants is to seduce the male species. In the stable she confesses to Lennie that she was unhappy with

Despite being a woman in the 1930s, Curley’s wife possessed power over others on the ranch, primarily because her husband was the boss’s son. Although the men often thought that she was ineffectual, she ascertained to quickly prove them wrong. For example, when talking to Crooks she was very straightforward with her authority: “Well you keep your place then, ni**er. I could get you strung up on a tree so fast it ain’t even funny”(81). Even though she would not be the one to actually pursue that threat, she knew how to use her words to get somebody else to.…

    1. I think that people in the 1930s did not think women were important because of how they isn't giving a specific name for Curley's wife but they just prefered her as "Curley's wife" or "she/her" as a name for Curley's wife. "I never seen nobody like her. She got the eye goin' all the time on everybody..." [p.51] "Wait'll you see Curley's wife."…

She was a dreamer that was incapable of grasping her dreams. Being called a tart, the eye and the trap, Curley’s wife is the lone female on a all-male ranch on the Salinas Valley in northern California. The men on the ranch only think of her as an object, never as a real person with feelings. The novella Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck portrays Curley’s wife as powerless and dangerous, using temptation to gain companionship which causes sympathy for the reader. Upon analysing the two novels: ‘Of Mice and Men' and ‘Macbeth', I have differentiated the two female characters Lady Macbeth and Curley's wife. Many would agree with the fact that Lady Macbeth isn't your typical Tudor woman. In my opinion, Lady Macbeth wouldn't fall into the category as a stereotypical Elizabethan woman as she doesn't embody the qualities of one but this doesn’t mean she doesn’t embody the qualities of a woman. Never the less, she is the complete opposite of the stereotypical Elizabethan woman; as when she quotes "spirits that lend on mortal thoughts, unsex me here", shows evidence as to why I think that she isn't a typical Elizabethan woman. Here, Lady Macbeth is calling for her womanly traits to be removed from her body by…
