Why Is Curley So Dangerous

A second way in which we can tell that Curley is harmful to the other men is when he relentlessly struck Lennie, this leads on from the previous example, as it is what takes place after he starts threatening Lennie for smiling.

‘Curley was balanced and poised. He slashed at Lennie with his left, and then smashed down his nose with a right. Lennie gave a cry of terror. Blood welled from his nose.’
“George, make ‘um leave me alone, George.”
‘He backed until he was against the wall, and Curley followed, slugging him in the face. Lennie’s hands remained at his sides; he was too frightened to defend himself.”

Towards the very beginning of the novel, when Curley first became acquainted with George and Lennie, we could recognise Curley’s dangerous nature. He decided to become confrontational towards Lennie for not answering for himself when asked a question.

“He can talk if he wants to tell you anything.” He nodded slightly to Lennie.
“We jus’ come in,” said Lennie softly.
Curley stared levelly at him. “Well nex’ time you answer when you’re spoke to.” He turned toward the door and walked out, his elbows were still bent out a little.

This informs the reader that Curley is a danger to the other men, as he was willing to pick on a new ranch worker on his first day, for something as nonsensical as letting someone else answer his answers for him! If he is willing to do that to someone on his first day, there is a much higher chance of him wanting to harm someone on every day that follows. The men have to watch what they say or do, so that they don’t have to come face-to-face with a short, angry man, who happens to have several years of experience with

Curley is extremely competitive, a trait that is evident in his desire to prove himself in a fight with Lennie and in his constantly asking where his wife is, as if he is competing with the other workers for her or demonstrating his "ownership" of her.
