I firmly believe that the term "critical thinking" is in fact far less related to strict guidelines of what is or is not critical thinking, but rather the ability to step back from any given practice, problem - anything really - and reexamine it anew. When companies are asking for people who have critical thinking skills it's not that they are asking for employees to sit down, take a test where they "critically think" about different scenarios, and then describe the "right" answer - and I believe that is what most students believe they are being asked to do - but rather that the company is asking you to sit down and examine those scenarios to see what "weird" ideas you can come up with. Because being weird is how you innovate, and as economies become more competitive than at any point in human history companies have to be innovating constantly in order to stay alive.…

The diverse ways in which critical thinking can be applied are astonishing. One may find themselves in a group project working towards a common goal and an individual would find it immensely helpful to be able to process the ideas or statements and go through steps exploring possible problems, solutions, and meanings. In a professional environment, possessing this skill would demonstrate not only competency, but leadership. In a meeting, one may be asked what one thinks of the ideas that have been discussed and it would serve one well to be able to analytically and intellectually reflect on what has been discussed and arrive at an answer to a problem that one’s peers would comprehend. Possessing the skill of thinking critically is crucial in all parts of life; it is a skill that will be easily noticed and assist one in answering any question that…

In my quest for answers, I constantly seek the truth of things so I can understand them the best I can. I gather all the facts, and evaluate the information objectively to formuate a hypothesis, giving me the most likely truth and answer. It's what critical thinkers call "empirical reasoning". I ask you to read this scenario, and then I leave it to up to you to decide for yourself if critical thinking is something we all should be using a lot more of as we tip-toe through our daily lives, fearing that something we might say will offend someone.…
