Evaluation of why counseling supervision is important from an ethical perspective

The profession of counseling has the ability to impact society by assisting individuals to work toward wellness and balance. Therefore, providing counselors-in-training with supervision is both important and ethical. As a trainee experiencing the supervision process, I would hope to encounter a supervisor that incorporates the Littrell, Lee-Bordern,a nd Lorenz Model and Bernard model, as described by Nelson, Johnson and Thorngren (p. 51, 2000). The authors expand on the combined model by describing four stages of trainee development while also stating the benefits of including both models. In general, I would prefer one-on-one and group supervision throughout the entire supervision process. During the orientation stage, I would like to be provided with individual supervision and expect the supervisor to “discuss expectations, set goals, and agree on the tasks of supervision” (Nelson, Johnson & Thorngren, 2000, p. 51) based on the type of internship environment I was able to secure. Comparing Codes of Ethics The very nature of the counseling profession places professional counselors in close proximity with people, information, and influence. Due to this, ethical dilemmas can arise throughout the course of this work. To help aid in the protection of counselors, and to provide a framework for ethical practice, ethical codes have been developed and instituted within the profession. As Beuchamp and Childress stated (as cited in Calley, 2009), “in the counseling profession, ethical standards are required to protect clients, guide professional behavior, ensure the autonomy of professionals, increase the status of the profession, enhance the client 's and the community 's trust in the profession, and articulate collegial conduct between professionals,” (p. 476).…

A supervisory relationship is a relationship that exists between a supervisor and the supervisee. For a supervisory relationship to be successful, the relationship must embody the qualities of sensitivity, dependability, attentiveness, respectfulness, collaborativeness, and reflection (Youngstrom, 2014). Sensitivity is achieved when both parties are perceptive of and responsive to the others professional and personal needs. Supervisors can demonstrate sensibility by recognizing the limits of the knowledge and knowing when to refer the supervisee to another person who can better respond to their needs. Dependability is another quality that improves the supervisory relationship.…
