Why Is Cornell Note Taking Important

Whether it is writing, typing, highlighting, or underlining; note taking has many different methods and different process that may be helpful. Out of all the different methods of note taking out there in this world and in many schools, students usually learn and use the “Cornell Note” method as to taking notes. This method is different than any other not taking method and is very useful for studying or reviewing. This will also help students improve the skill of note taking. The Cornell note method is a helpful strategy that involves with the cue column, note taking column and the summary.

The “Summary” is located right under the “Cue Column” and “Note Taking Method”. Usually, students do the summary last as they complete creating questions, discover the main ideas, and understand the ideas in their notes (Oberg). Once the students have completed the “Cue Column” and the “Note Taking Column”, this is when they begin to write their summary of understanding the main ideas and what they learned (Oberg line 11-12). When students write their summary, it is important they include the most important information about the main ideas and their understanding of the main ideas (Oberg). The summary should have at least five sentences, which consist of what the student learned, what they understand, and how the students can use this as their study guide (Writing a Cornell Notes Summary). But sometimes, the summary length can be a short as up to two sentences and can also work well with using bulleted points or creating a diagram (Cornell System of Notetaking). The note taking column is a great way to writing precise information about and topic or subject and is also a great way to discovering the main ideas and having supporting details to support the main ideas for any type of subject or topic. It’s important for student to have enough facts so it can help them create question and topics as they review their notes. Then comes the summary, which is a great source to help students summarize the main ideas and to discuss what they learn and understand from any give topic or subject.
