Why Is Confucianism Important To Family Caregiving?

The conclusions of this paper suggest several applications to research, practice, and education. We can apply positive impacts of Confucianism to family caregiving. To meet the health need of family caregivers with high levels of responsibilities and obligations, we can support them by developing culturally appropriate interventions to reduce caregiver depression, obligations, burden, and stress, and increase emotional well-being. Filial affection can positively function. Also, to reduce burden based on the role of gender influenced by Confucianism and promote gender parity in the roles and responsibilities of caregiving (Gupta, Rowe, & Pillai, 2009), we need to explore the experience of women. There are several strategies for family caregivers. Family members can share their responsibilities with other family members, relatives, or friends. We can recommend them to consider facility-based care. Some family members feel guilty and have a social stigma associated with the use of facilities due to the expectation from the view of Confucianism (Chee & Levkoff, 2001). We can explain that the use of facilities for providing care is not unethical; the use of facilities is beneficial when it comes to the importance of maintaining positive feelings, being emotionally and mentally healthy, and keeping a balance between their autonomous lives and the obligations as a caregiver. Using facility-based care can be considered having social support, which can be helpful for caregivers’ psychological health. We should educate family caregivers to have a positive perception of the use of facilities at a societal level. Further studies using a rigorous design or method can explore how to support them by suggesting more coping strategies and the effectiveness of those
