Just because knights are no longer common, does that mean chivalry is dead? Has the presence of honorable men vanished from society? I believe that chivalry is not dead, but rather it is simply different than it was in the medieval age. The standards of what is polite and chivalrous change with our ever-progressing society. For example, long ago it would have been common for knights to fight with swords over a lady, but now, chivalry can be something as simple as holding the door open. Some may say that chivalry died when the era of knighthood ended, however, one does not need to be a knight to follow the code of chivalry. Chivalry is simply being respectable, brave, strong, and just. These qualities can be achieved by anyone, not just a knight. Men have been serving in the army since the beginning of warfare. The military is a dangerous place and it takes a strong and courageous man to enlist. They are risking their lives to protect the families and children at home. Secondly, men are supposed to walk on the outside of sidewalks to protect a lady. This tradition is a bit more uncommon, but the meaning in the gesture is commendable. Any situation where one puts another’s safety before themselves is chivalrous. Thirdly, most men are seen as strong and dominant and in our media's culture they serve as bodyguards. Paparazzi and stalkers are becoming more aggressive and persistent and their work and it takes an intelligent and tough man to ward them off. Finally, men are commonly seen as the head of their family, which often includes the role of being a protector. In a risky situation, the father typically steps in and does whatever he can to ensure the safety of his relatives.
