Censorship is good for society
Let’s not run away from the truth. Censorship is as straightforward as a chimney filter. A chimney filter filters all the gas particles which are harmful to the sky. Similarly, censorship censor lies, propaganda, hate speech and anything that can be harmful to society. I know this to be true, because I have experienced the life almost without censorship in Canada and with censorship in Iran, and I have read articles about censorship from two different perspectives. You might not accept the truth that censorship is good and necessary for society, but you will by the end of this essay. I

Nowadays, hate speech can easily target Muslims, Jewish, Christian, Chinese, Indians, Irish, black people, and even white people. With the help of technology anyone from any part of the world can say whatever lies they want against any group of people. Censoring is the first step to stop racism. Hate speech should be censored because of three understandable reasons. First, hate speech is connected to hate-based acts of murder, rape, and theft. Hate speech, if done well by some experts, can be so persuasive and transform so much hate into a person’s heart that he/she blindly does whatever it takes to express his/her hate. Once hate takes away your heart, you become a robot. For example, ISIS’s Facebook and twitter channels which have been full of hate speeches have convinced around “27,000” people to join its barbaric acts. Propaganda, misinformation and lies can manipulate anyone. There are many people who do not ask or check for the references of the news that they read or hear. In a study by the Innovation Center of US Dairy, conducted on people over the age of 18, it was found that nearly 10% of American (32.31 millions) genuinely believe that chocolate milk comes from brown cows! (Hosie) And 48% (155.1 millions) do not know where chocolate milk comes from (Hosie). No wonder why Trump who made 1,057 lies, false or misleading claims in 7 months, became the president (Kelly, Kessler and Ye Hee Lee). This population that can be fooled easily should be protected and the only way to protect is to censor lies, propaganda and misinformation. The Soviet Union was defeated in a “soft war” by USA in 1990 and the country collapsed into 15 countries. A soft war is a war that targets a country’s culture and beliefs. People were convinced that democracy and western culture is the best way to live. For example, 30,000 people awaited the opening of the first McDonald that represents influence of western culture in Soviet Union in 1990. A Soft war is more dangerous than a physical war, because it’s effective, deniable, and affordable. The only way to protect our people in this fight is to censor enemies’ influences and lies which are real

The idea of placing a book on a closed shelf is in its most basic form, censorship, the one thing US constitution was supposed to protect from. But even without using a hedgemonical argument that US is always right, one can simply look to recent examples of censorship and how its presence harms the core value of human capital:knowledge. If a person were to see a picture of an adorable puppy, what would he do? What if the image showed the aftermath of a bloody battle? Images and pictures produce an immediate and powerful response within a person's brain, and consequently this is why visual propaganda is so powerful. Some who live with more social freedoms like to believe that propaganda is less effective than it actually is because they can recognize the biases within it, and that propaganda is different because of the moral messages it holds. However, visual propaganda is essential to swaying public opinion during times of war, and fundamentally there are no differences between propaganda produced by different countries.…

The censoring is done for the good of the public, so the viewers don’t see or hear anything vulgar. But there’s another type of censoring that isn’t truly benefiting the public: the censorship of literature and language. While some books have been banned for years, the banning of language is new. By censoring language and literature in schools and elsewhere, students are being sheltered and many people are being deprived of the freedom of speech, even in our own state.…
