Some people think that Canada is too “soft”, as they abolished the death penalty in 1976. By doing this, Canada has realized that there are better ways of dealing with offenders. If we as society have progressed is other matters, like legalizing gay marriage and euthanasia, why are we still stuck in our old ways for certain things? How can we support such an unethical behavior of murder and try to justify this barbaric behavior? Billions of dollars are spent to maintain death row prisoners; could our tax money not be put to better use? Even if it is used for life imprisonment, at least it is not used to murder. Who are we, as a society, to judge who is to live and who is to die?
Through this research essay, I hope to discover and learn more about capital punishment in the United States and how it is not fulfilling its purpose. I want to discover more of the reasons that make capital punishment an unethical behavior and how we as a society can handle criminal offences as seriously, but in a more humane matter. The primary and secondary sources I plan to use to support my argument have been put in my reference list; I plan on using these sources to answer all the questions stated above while supporting my argument of how capital punishment is unethical
