Public opinion has a major impact on policy outcomes in the United States, as Democrats always say “give the people what they want” (Soss, Langbein, Metelko 397). Society did not always support capital punishment, especially in 1966 when a low of 47% of society was in favor of capital punishment (Soss, Langbein, Metelko 397). With the percent of people supporting capital punishment low, the Supreme Court decided to make a decision to abolish capital punishment from the United States in 1972, ruling that capital punishment was cruel and unusual punishment (Ellsworth, Gross 23). The Supreme Court did not make this ruling based off of just society opinion, but the fact that there were states that where killing mentally sick and innocent people. At the time of this ruling by the Supreme Court there were a total of 630 men on death row and all men had their sentence reduced to life without parole. There is too much wrong doing going on and it affects society greatly. The racial discrimination that goes on I our court rooms when comes to the death penalty should be addressed as there are too many whites getting lesser penalty’s than the ones they deserve. And the society should really think about if capital punishment is acting as deterrence to crimes or is capital punishment just another way to kill people. As this essay has shown that capital punishment if not as effective as society needs it to be because there is more and more homicides every day.
