The historical play, “Julius Caesar”, by William Shakespeare illustrates the problems of leadership that commence after the assassination of the Roman dictator, Julius Caesar. The play has a thorough use of rhetorical devices and was a powerful persuasion tool during the whole of the show. This literary device is extensively used during the funeral scene in Act three, Scene two where Marcus Brutus and Mark Antony give their speeches about Caesar's death. In their funeral speeches, while Marcus Brutus delivered a logical speech, Mark Antony overall wins the crowd through his use of ethics and empathy. This battle of words takes place during Caesar’s funeral, where both Anthony and Brutus speak in a bid to win over the large crowds of plebeians. There is a major difference between the two character’s and how they address the crowds. Brutus speaks first and reasoning with the crowd using logic; Brutus uses superlatives to argue his case more persuasively: “Not that I loved Caesar less, but that I loved Rome more.” (3.2.20) Through juxtaposing Caesar and Rome, Brutus hopes to simplify his argument against Caesar in order for the plebeians to understand more clearly. This is reinstated by the fact that Shakespeare had Brutus speak in prose which was the style of speech used by the common man.…

In a sarcastic tone, Antony repeatedly referred to these "honourable men". Repeating "Honourable men" is also seen to be ironic, he's ridiculing Brutus and the conspirators saying his idea of Caesar being so ambitious, he's a threat, is something to laugh about. Every time Antony cleverly pauses in his speech to let the plebeians comment, the plebeians are more spiteful toward the conspirators. As the crowd begins to favour Antony the citizens make comments like "Methinks there is much reason in his saying" which shows there change in opinion. Antony said his speech, after Brutus so Antony could adapt to what Brutus has already said and even prove it wrong.…
