Why Is Black History Month Important

Black History Month is a celebration regarding the significance of African Americans and their impact on American history. Throughout history, African Americans have always toiled with racism and obtaining equality and justice. Consistent attempts to conceive equality between African Americans and whites, such as the Civil War, have been accomplished, but prejudice still exists. This month has enlightened the hardships African Americans have undergone and the advances they have made. The ongoing debate of whether Black History Month is necessary remains in the world. The importance of the month outweighs the contrary, because it would be sending false assumptions to the youth that the topic is extraneous, acquires African Americans a time to celebrate their history without criticism, and it bridges racial divides. The elimination of Black History Month would be sending false assumptions to the youth, that the topic is extraneous. African Americans have already endured the experience of others overseeing the hardships they have conquered. Black History Month was chosen to be celebrated on the second week of February because it celebrated the birthdays of two men who greatly influenced the African American population. “Frederick Douglass, an escaped slave who became one of the foremost black abolitionists and civil rights leaders in the nation, and President Abraham Lincoln, who signed the Proclamation of Independence…” (Source 1) Both of the infamous men paid great contribution to the exemption of African Americans. It is important that black Americans feel free to celebrate their history and culture without the fear of being criticized. By taking away this month, it will be taking away the meaning of it and significance to the black
