When we look at the anniversary that happened three years ago you look at Ferguson, Missouri, and in New York. The Civil Rights Act helped us to look at what happened and how it could have been better and worse for each of the tragedies. When looking at the problems and what happened we look at how some of the different problems like “black lives matter” movement and by the Supreme Court and the decisions on voting rights. Does an HBCU offer an African American student more than a PWI? An HBCU, “is a Historically Black College or University, that was founded by our ancestors to educate us on our history as African-American descents.” Before HBCUs were a thing, African Americans were free slaves that were not allowed to get an education. This did not stop them from learning a way to read, write, and calculate math. The Philadelphia Quakers founded the Institute of Colored Youth, so the children will have the opportunity to get an education.…

In our country, from the beginning of its roots we saw a negative result because of this lack of tolerance against people who were not white, at times when there major social, economic, or political upheavals was taking place in the U.S. It was at these times that some groups would blame recent arriving immigrants or ethnic/religious groups different from their own for the troubles that America was experiencing. As a result, it was not uncommon for racist attitudes do develop against these scapegoats, their perception that their chosen scapegoat was un-American and harbored alien ideas which were a threat to the American way of life. Those threats had to be dealt with even if it meant violating the Constitution or an American’s basic civil rights, as we saw in the current class, the Native American, the stealing of their land, the desecration of their holy areas, the incarceration and murder; in addition to the U.S. government breaking the contracts with the natives when it was beneficial to the white people and later on with Hollywood, portraying the natives as savages in the movies of cowboys and Indians, not as people trying to defend their land from the invading terrorist and in the present time, the government still does not want to give back the sacred land the Native Americans are requesting to be returned to…

Although this was a very significant celebration, it had its ups and downs. Williams states ‘’by the early 1900s, there was a decline, mostly due to economic and cultural changes. Hard times forced many Blacks to head North to find work’’ (qtd.in Williams 1). This didn’t stop African Americans from fighting for this national holiday, there began a campaign in Washington D.C. which brought back interest in Juneteenth (Williams 1).…

Winning in the American Revolution meant no longer being ruled by the British monarchy, which gave the newly established government the ability to make their own choices, but was this freedom for everyone? No, although, it was a step in the right direction. I used to think history was the study of past events and the causes or consequences that led to the present. However, I failed to realize that history also pertains to recognizable patterns and human behavior, in other words, history is the study of people.…

Black History Month has a very important place in our history. It is the month where we celebrate the contributions of many heroes who gained rights for their race. A period of time when these individuals stood up for what they believed was right, they stood up during the time of racial segregation. Racial segregation is the separation of people of different races due to a law. Examples included separate eating areas at a restaurant, separate fountains, separate washrooms, separate schools, separate sitting areas in a bus, at a hotel and separate rules for renting or purchasing a home.…

Black history month is celebrate not only in United States but also in Canada and England. Black history is celebrated with the success of African Americans in being able to reform society, fighting for equality, making and reforming music, and activists who put their own life on the line to get the equality not only for African-Americans but other minority races as well. One of my personal heroes from African American descent that is associated with black history month is Martin Luther king Jr. because he fought for equality of all people of color which during his time was something extremely dangerous to do and he stood up for what he believed was right. Martin Luther King fought for equality of all people of color.…

As African Americans we are descendants of slaves and non-slaves. The pain and the struggle and the misery we been throughout slavery and racial segregation in United States should be recognized even more besides celebrating one Black History month out of the year. As black people theirs a lack of respect as much of the equality that we have, we will be lower than the white folks and it shows in our history and present. Also we are not respected in the media and even justice is not served when it comes to our African American brothers and sisters. Especially in the Trayvon Martin, Mike Brown, Sandra Bland cases and many more completely no justice.…

This means that Black History Month will give us opportunities to really understand African Americans and what they did to survive or to be treated equally. Not to just know the facts but to understand them. There was a study in 2014 grading all fifty states and the District of Columbia on how well their public schools taught the Civil Rights Era. Twenty of the states received a failing grade. Alaska, Iowa, Maine, Oregon, and Wyoming-Civil Rights education was totally absent from state standards and curriculum.…

The Tenth Anniversary On the tenth anniversary of the murder of one of the biggest influences on racial equality, Martin Luther King Jr, an article written by Cesar Chavez was published in a religious magazine, this article talks definitively about nonviolent resistance and it’s opposite, resistance through violence. Cesar Chavez reaches his point on nonviolence being the best possible way to succeed in protests by writing in a certain way that allows everyone to understand his points. His article also follows a compare and contrast structure between violence and nonviolence that leaves the audience with a feeling of certainty and he persuades the audience using a confident and appealing tone.
